Makes sense if you consider it.
They're trying to increase the attractiveness of their mainstream Athlon 64 line, and a primary way to do this is a price drop.
However costs must be recouped, so you up the price slightly on the less attractive, yet still well-selling cheaper product.

makes sense but is kinda stupid.. Athlon xp processors are still highly in demand. Forcing people to pay extra for them is sounds like something intel would do. Due to the lack of 64 software and drivers people are holding off on the big move and just extending their current systems with newer xp procs.
I personally was planning to move to a 3000 or 3200 xp but not if they are gonna jack me on the price.
Thrax you would rip intel a new ass for doing something like this.. The 64 line maybe their new line but it is far from mainstream. Other than those here who have them, I dont know anyone here locally that has a box with one.

You said it yourself, Gobbles. Athlon XP processors are high in demand, a perfect reason to kick up the price. That way they make the 64 bit processors that more attractive, future technology, lower price. Its going to make the average joe want to buy that instead of the XP. They want to get their customers to move on and make the 64bit mainstream, this is one way to do it.
It's actually a good marketing decision.
