for the love of god, please dont rip off doom3. go out and buy it. u'll enjoy it much more if u wait till the actual release and buy it. just think. the joy of opening the box, putting the cd in your drive, using your very own cd key, and playing the game guilt free. i mean honestly. we have waited this long, at least wait 1 more day!

I feel that ID software honestly deserves my money anyhow.

Agreed. I stopped doing stuff like that a long time ago once I realized the time and effort that these guys go through to program their games, hence my large vid game box collection at the top of my computer.

I agree as well. I also stopped pirating games, because I truly began to realize that these people (the programmers, artists, etc) who created this product, truly deserve to be rewarded for it, and the best way to do that is to give them the money they deserve, despite the fact that I get scoffed at over it all the time. I can afford it, they deserve my money because I want it, and if I give them money, they could possibly use that money to get something they want from me.

On the other hand, charging $100+ for something that I need to use in order to make my computer useful because they influenced everyone else to only write applications for their instruction set is wrong. Because that's just the perfect example of price gouging (They know I need it from them, and because I don’t have a choice, they take as much from me as they can get away with).

Sorry but I don't agree. If I had got hold an "evaluation" copy of Far Cry before I went out & bought it then I wouldn't have wasted £35, same goes for Alien vs Predator and a few other games I've bought.

TheSmJ

Then next time, wait for an evaluation copy if you're unsure it's worth it. Rumor has it that there will be a Doom 3 demo a couple weeks after release.

I don't buy games blind.

Then don't get them at all untill they come out with a free (legal) alternitive for you to try.

Or, try out someone else's copy if you dont feel like waiting for a demo.

Ditto. Anyways, Demo's are like commercials, doesn't mean **** compaired to the real deal. Well the original Tribes' demo was a blast with many MOD's and that was alot of fun... But I don't DL or buy games anymore-anyways.

Here's my take on it.

I think it's a good idea to support these game studios that are releasing such great games. It's been over a year since I pirated a game, and I don't plan to do so at any time in the future, now that I'm out of school and hopefully will begin to make some money soon.

However, I think it's ridiculous that so many games are going up in price at release. Years ago, $25 seemed like a lot to pay for two floppy disks. More recently, $50 became the standard release price of a game. Now, it's creeping up. Doom3 is selling for $55 new. Warcraft III came out at like $60 or something. It's ridiculous. Everyone should do what UT2K4 did, release lower priced games, and more people will buy them rather than pirate them. If every game that came out was released at $40 like UT2K4, I'd buy more games when new. If every game that came out was released at $30, I'd have bought them rather than pirate them for many years now, and I'm sure that there are many folks like me out there.

Man this reply took so long because all my bandwidth is being absorbed from downloading everything!

Kidding. I buy good games that I plan on playing online...after trying them out.

i download games all the time. if the game is good i buy it. that said, doom 3 is awesome (at least the ten minutes i played so far) and i agree that prices have gone too far. i didn't download either ut2k3 or 2k4 because i felt they priced reasonably. i mean 2k4, $29 for a dvd version, headsets, and collector's box, that's an awesome deal. I'll buy doom 3 eventually, but not for $55. and yeah, far cry, it's ok, but i don't see what everyone is raving about. it's pretty, but gets a little boring.

I try the demos and if I like the demo I buy the game, FarCry demo was pretty much the island cove part of the game with a few minor differences, BF'42 SWofWW2 was another example of a demo that was pretty true to the source.
I figure that the demo will just end up being a pale imitation of what the game is and that's usually the case.
I doubt that anyone here would want to spend hours upon hours doing a job to the best of their ability (although some games are lame, granted but the effort is still there) only to have the persons that are supposed to be paying you for that job just take your work and walk away without giving you a dime. I've been there and trust me it sucks.

Sorry but I <3 the Newsgroups. If I like a game and think it's worth the purchase then I'll buy it. Doom 3 I'm gonna try, I'll most likely end up buying it tho.

If I had known all the issues with UT2k4 when it came out I wouldn't have wasted my money on it. Seeing that I had to get a cracked .exe to play the damn thing, I should have downloaded it. So I will not buy blind like Rob said.

If I don't like a game, I'm not going to keep it.

1. Download the game, delete it if I don't like it, developer never sees my money.
2. Buy the game for $50, return it if I don't like it, get ALL my money back, developer never sees my money.

Difference is...?

great example! only problem with it is that most retailers will only let you get the same exact title if you return it opened. but you make a great point regardless. two weeks ago i dl'd fifa euro 2004. played one match, got bored, deleted it. in the case of doom 3, i will buy this game, however i didn't want to wait until august 4.

And likewise, as Kanez was indicating with Doom 3, if I find a really great game.. I'm headed to the store! UT2K4 is a great example. Played the demo for 20 minutes, went and bought it.

whats the deal with this post? Is doom3 like widely available for download or something or is this just a general post to tell us not to download games?

I don't download games because I don't really play them that much anymore, I generally wait 2-3 months before I'll buy something, only game I bought brand new was Command and Conquer: Generals, and I really like the game but I still feel ripped paying $50 for a video game, Doom3 looks like it's going to be sweet but I can't justify dropping $55 for a video game, I don't think it's going to give me $55 worth of entertainment. Speaking of UT2k4, I have been playing the demo everyday cause it rules and I'm sure the price is dropped, I think while everyone is out buying D3 I'm gonna be the oddball at Best Buy getting UT2k4 and acting like its brand new or something :)

I hate it when people download games. It is true that many do use this ability admirably and don't abuse it, however there are many more that use it for darker uses. I highly suggest to use one of your greatest virtues, the virtue of patience.

One thing about Demos though is that they can't show you the replay value. So I would suggest reading up on the game.

For every person which downloads a game for the soul reason to try it, and delete it if they dislike it, there are 10 more who won't.

I contest your reasoning Thrax.... If the store bought the game to stock it, the developer already got paid for it. They don't "pass your money along" to the developers. It's how the basic retail chain works - developer sells it to wholesaler, sells it to retailer, sells it to consumer. You return it, the retailer loses out, but not the developer. So your argument is invalid because in scenario 1, yes the developer loses out, but in scenario 2, the developer does indeed get paid because it has already been marked as a sale.

The upside of scenario 2 is YOU GET TO STICK IT TO THE MAN. ;D

But the more copies the retailer has in stock at the store, the less that they would need to buy in order to restock their shelves.

i buy games i like, i.e. Starcraft, Diablo 2, Warcraft, CS. i buy them because i know i love them and i want blizzard to make more great games. im not too much of a heavy gamer, usually if its a game im questionable about i download it, i usually end up not liking and deleting it. right now i dont have any pirated games installed. why? because half of them ar not even worth downloading.. at least for me....

there IS one thing i WILL pirate tho, and not thinking twice about it. and microsoft knows what im talking about. those dirty scoudrels (i think i spelled that right, lol)

but oh well...

I got the pre-order so I should get $10 off the top.
I sure hope this means they have the presold copies stashed somewhere ...not that I think they'll sell out the first day ...possibly this weekend maybe.

That's some expensive growth, you don't think it's growing fast enough as it is?

I can't believe they sold CS retail, that was awful lame.

It could be growing a lot faster as far as I'm concerned.

I can believe they sold CS retail, I mean, the game was so popular that you just couldn't not sell it. CS for Half-Life too will probably be an outright buy, not even downloadable.
