View Full Version : Anyone interested in a scsi raid controller cheap?
I got a group to go in once before and we bought FIVE of these and they bascialy came out to a hundred bucks a piece. I tested them and flashed them all to the newest bios and shipped them out to everyone. primesuspect from this site was one of trhe five lucky guys last time.
Here is a lot of TEN I have found in Ft. Worth near me.....but they are untested and not guaranteed with only one having a stick of ram but...
They have 18 hours left and they are at 240 bucks in auction. We could get them all for 350 or so maybe.
Anybody want to go in with me and take a chance here? I need like 5 or 6 guys to put up 50 bucks a piece and lets see if we can get these suckers and enough working ones for one a piece and sell the others if they work to get our mony back, If all ten happened to work we could have 6 good ones to keep and sell the other 4 for maybe 400 bucks and the six good ones would cost nothing.
Who wants a megaraid Elite 1600 controller? These are the ones I keep posting ATTO's like this one from.

And in case anyone has any doubts, this guy doesn't screw around - he made this wild ass claim last time and it turned out he was right on the money - I got a $1000 caching raid controller for $100. Trust Tex, this is a good deal.

I am interested Tex. Is there any chance to have one sent to Europe?

Just so you know Mack, I've sent PCI cards to the UK before for as little as $7.00.. So, I'm sure sending one to you won't cost much, probably under $20. luckily, they are very light :)
I'll ship anywhere that someone wants to pay the shipping for Bud.
I ship to the North Pole if you can line up a dog sled team. last time I got them shipped to me, tested them and flashed them etc... and then shipped them out to each of the other five guys.
These ten are NOT GUARANTEED so we are taking a chance but hopefully some of them work. If it got down to it and lets say only 5 worked and we had 5 guys and me in on the deal... I will step out of the deal and let you guys have them if you pay my share as I already have two anyway. But right now they are only at 240 bucks so they are 25 bucks a piece basicaly. If they end up at 300 bucks and only THREE work we did ok really as for 100 bucks a pop these are outrageous controllers. These do not include the ram but they take ecc (or non ecc) sdram. They say ecc but I ran my first one with ecc ram and it functioned fine.

probably did have ya worried last tikme. I never even thought of it as wild ass claims as I had worked with these so much and knew what a deal they were.
btw.... Did you see that huge ass rack of scsi driovers and cases I scored for free?
Robin comes into the office arae now and screams and high tails her butt right back out of there.
I want to sell some of that crap and get a couple nice computer rack chassis for the duallys I keep putting off.

They were not going under. They had stored some of their older stuff in this building and they got the buiilding when they bought out one of their competitors. This is a HUGE printing company with million dollar heidelberg presses. They replaced that 12 rack scsi pile with a single rack of modern 73gb drives.
But that DLT library is making me cry. The buddy found it and laid claim before I saw it.... (grin)
Tex
We need money up and in place in 18 hours. Clock is ticking here guys... If we don't get enough people and the ones already in don't want to go above 50 bucks I just PayPal the money right back to ya. Same if we don't win the auction.
I don't have to have the money to bid.. But I need only firm guys that won't back out cause if we win the money has to get moved so we can pay pretty quick. Would prefer guys that I know from one of the sites I post on just so I know they are serious and in for the ride.

I pay about 45 bucks a pop for the Atlas 10k III's. The fuji maps are getting cheaper and are much faster but still more expensice too.
Tex
This guy isnt far from my house. I emailed asking if I could test a couple. I just want to see the scsi bios show up and know they are not dead. If I tested two or three even and they showed the bios I would feel a lot better about the deal.
I bet he does not let me test them though but it was worth a try.

aaahhhhh damn it! it requires a 64 bit PCI slot doesn't it? ARRRGHGHRHHRG...
No they fit in 32 or 64 bit slots. I have never tested performance in a 32bit slot to be honest though.
They take normal sdram. It really wants ecc stuff. But I ran mine without. It was picky about the number of chips and crap on it to see it right. I finally thru a 512mb stick in that it saw as 128mb. I tried a 256 it saw as 64 etc... The online docs detail exactly what the stick should be.

And none of my drives are 15k. The differance in speed versus noice isnt real big on older drives. Some of the older 15k drives had a pretty nasty whine to them and they run HOT too.
The new 15k's are much much better. If you buy used you might want to stick to 10k drives.
I love the Atlas 10k III's. Dead quiet and not to hot.

even if used on a 32 bit PCI slot, (btw, my KX7-raid doesn't have a 64 bit PCI slot does it? :D) it should still be noticeably faster than a 7200 RPM raid-0 array shouldn't it?

Can it be a singlesided versus a doublesided issue? I think it MAY only like singlesided ones.
I think most the ones I was trying were single sided. The two I have running here are both using the battery backed sticks of ram. I can read ya off chip numbers or anything you want off them though.

Everyone can absolutely trust Tex for this. Tex always delivers but just be patient. I waited a good long time for my purchase from him...actually it was from a member named FLINTSTONE who shipped it to Tex while he tested it. He found 3 drives for me and then added personal items to the package that he eventually shipped to me.
Tex went above and beyond. Everything arrived under the radar of customs and it was all incredibly well packed in foam.
Five stars for buying off Tex. Make sure you put a little extra in there to buy him a beer or two. Don't be afraid of shipping him a check in advance either. He'll deliver!

They are Dell Perc3's. Same thing. I take them and flash them with the straight LSI bios's. This is what we bought a lot of Five of before that Prime and flintstone and everyone got. Both the dell perc3's and Gateway ADAC controllers are just Elite 1600's with other firmware. I flash them to the latest LSI bios.
If we get these I will test each one and flash the ones that work to the newest LSI bios before shipping. When I test them I attach drives... build a raid array and benchmark it as part of the testing guys so we know both channels on the controller are OK and stuff. I don't just turn it on and see if the bios comes up. I actually test each one thouroughly before giving it the Tex stamp of approval and package them for shipment to you. Last time the whole deal took less then 48 hours to test them and shipp them I think.
If you have not ever messed with scsi we can do a deal Like I did for mediaMan and setup drives, cables termiknators, and the whole deal for ya if ya want. Basicaly you plug it in as per my instructions and I include drivers and everything for ya etc..

Everyone think hard about this one more time as these are not guarateed. We HOPE to at the least get one per person. If we get 7 guys to chip in 50 bucks for a 350 bid and lets say only FIVE work... I'll step down and one other guy will have to also... In this scenario I guess you draw straws BUT the remaining five that get one need to kick in another 20 a piece to pay us back for steppiong back. So your total would be 70 then not 50. But by the same totken we could get lucky and all ten work. So everyone gets one and we sell the other three and you almost get yours for free.
So there is a risk here and everyone needs to see that and gulp hard once and make up you mind once and for all.
I have another buddy that says he is in. I am in for sure.
Anyone that can quote this post I just made so I know you are reading the risks and see what could happen and still wants in should post below here and use the QUOTE BUTTON so I know you read thisand still want in.
You may pay a little over 50 depending on how many work. You may pay almost NOTHING depending on how many work. It works both ways. Do ya feel luicky and still want to play?

Ten for sale in the auction. The right piece of regular sdram works. They say use ecc. I ran mine on regular sdram for awhile though. As I pointed out it is picky about the chips on it as far as being able to see the total amount of ram correctly.
The gamble is we don't know how many work. Its a crap shoot.

All I can add is that the guy has over 450+ transactikons on eBay and when you look thru the feedback teh only complaint showing just about is his response to someone that bitched and he claimed the guy tried to return a differant drive then the one he sold him as he marks his products. So its hard to know but he seems like a honest seller not a fly by night sorta guy.

Short-Media Disclaimer:
Tex is great at finding these deals but be aware that this lot features items that are not guaranteed. This is at buyer's risk. Tex nor Short-Media are not responsible for items that do not live up to expectations or are DOA. While the lot may be of items that were working at the tiem of pull...they are not 100% guaranteed.
I do know that Tex will most likely spend the time to test and upgrade each controller he gets. He is very good at taking care of people.
Those of you who are purchasing I do know it would help out Tex immensely if cashier's checks or personal checks were mailed to Tex in advance. He, like the rest of us, is not made of money and it is difficult to carry the cost of shipping to up to 10 buyers before receiving checks.
Please work out details with Tex in advance.
The money does not need sent in advance though. IF we win the bid he takes paypal so that makes it easy for guys in the US anyway, We have a week probably to scrape money together aftfer the bid but the sooner the better and I can't be fronting the money thats why I asked for dependable people that understand the risks inherant in a deal like this and NO short-media is not responsible for dead controllers and stuff. And neither am I guys! Thats why I was looking for guys willing to RISK 50 bucks. The reward is HUGE though.

Your better off just getting with me Mackanze and I'll show you what to look for in the drive specs. At least what it is that I look for. I watch transfer rate mainly. Either STR or the internal transfer rate.
I would myself only buy maybe 5 differant models right now and due to price I watch for only a couple drives in particular. There are afster ones. I jujst can't afford to play at that level. I have to get ones that are a compromise between price/performance and are also quiet and not to hot. That doesn't leave a long list.

Yes the controller works in a normal 32but slot but I have never tested the performance loss or anything.
If you get one plan ona 32bit slot but start looking for a used dualie board.
And for those inclined I have a pair of modded 1600 XP's I was running in one of my duallys for sale as we speak. They are unlocked and have the L5's fixed to work as a dual MP MB cpu.

About the battery backup: what does it do? Never seen a PCI card with a battery backup before (except solid state disks)...
The battery backed ram holds what was written to the cache but not written to the disk in case you crash or lose power etc.... When it comes up it finishs the IO held in the cache. Its not important for desktop machines as much as servers that may be holding 100 database transactions or something.

I would prefer AMD. How much does a K7D Master-L go for?
Used? On eBay a used one runs about 125 to 135. I paid 115 for mine. Depends on how patient you are.

I got my "new" *cough*bullsh!t*cough* MSI K7D-L on ebay for $160 (w/shipping)
The guy claimed it was new, never powered up, blah blah blah... So then, I wonder how the heatsink on the 760MPX got full of dust? What about the various capacitors on the board that had dust on one side but not the other? And the non-factory default BIOS settings? New my @ss. It was still a good deal though, and it works fine, so whatever... It's missing the MSI D-Bracket, but I'm not sure the -L comes with that in the first place, and it's not that big of a deal.
Anyhow, new, the K7D-Ls go for ~$200
Used, $100-$200
There are also a bunch of 760MP boards on ebay for $100 or less (or there was a month ago anyhow)...

i was keeping track of it, last time i checked it it was up to $380, this was last night some time, Tex had not bid on it yet. I'm guessing he had some proxy service to put in a bid with 3 seconds left. I guess we'll have to wait.
