View Full Version : New 6800 GT running stupidly slow!

I just got to install my eVGA 6800 GT today. After physically installing it, I reinstalled the chipset and video drivers.

When I try to run an nVidia demo (lets say Nalu) the application loads VERY slowly. As the splash screen is still being displayed, I can hear the music playing in the background. About 30 seconds later, a black screen appears with the control buttons at the top, the music still plays, but nothing is visible other than the buttons. Around 20 seconds later, I see a frame of the actual Nalu demo, another 20 seconds or so later, I see another frame. It's the slowest slideshow I've ever seen for god's sake...

Performance is slow in all games (including Doom 3), so it's not just nVidia's tech demos.

I turned fastwrites off in the BIOS, no help there. Forced 8X AGP on, still no help. Any ideas on what might be going on?

Reinstall directX?

If by reinstall, you mean installing over the old install, I could try that.

Yeah, why don't you install SP2 and that comes with 9.0c... It can't hurt.

Just turn it off. If you want to play doom3, come over to my house, it works great :D ;D

SP2 is installed already.

And as for your last comment; thanks a bunch!

Did you disable the folding client before trying all of this? Just checking.

Also ...don't use "Mack's settings" for Doom3 ...see my other post.

i had the same issues I reformatted and no issue at all

No, never disabled it at any point. At what points should I have tried disabling it exactly?

P.S. Tried the stock config for Doom 3, made no diff.

:barf:

I'll try that as a (very) last resort. What video card did you have beforehand?

EDIT: Folding disabled, still the same symptoms.

I found the problem! It seems having dualview enabled is what's causing the major slowdown. Once my secondary monitor is disabled, the card performs exactly as I thought it should.

Problem is, I really like using both monitors, and would hate to be forced to disable the secondary every time I wanted to play a game. Is there a workaround?

short answer - yes.

That was like one of the first D3 bugs found actually.

Several readers have also suggested a more elegant fix where you don't have to turn off your second monitor. You can go to the "Advanced" config menu for the NVIDIA driver, go to the "Performance" section, and check the "Show advanced settings" box. Scroll down to "Hardware acceleration" and pick "Single display mode." That should do the trick. If you get an all-white screen (or any single-color screen) when you start up DOOM 3, though, you have more work to do. Kill DOOM 3 in the Task Manager. Then switch the monitor inputs. The monitor showing DOOM 3 must be both the "primary monitor" in Windows and "monitor 1" on the graphics card. I went through this exact process myself, and it worked for me.

See if that helps.
