I think that they put the final nail in the coffin lid when they made the membership to "by invitation only". Every time I've checked that forums the last few months I was the only person on the site.

Could we possibly have an "Invite only" debate forum? Those that are invited should be well known to be responsible, and not carry a grudge to the rest of the site.

Also, the topics will not appear on the "Last updated" threads list, "post count" will not be taken, etc.

I know it became a problem for the old Icrontic (especially to some of the members) but I thought it was a very interesting read.

Indeed. That could be a good idea, except that it's still invitation only and some people not invited might get a bit peeved. Plus it makes loads of extra work for the admins.

The problem with making a debate forum "Invite only", the people who where not invited would consider it favoritism and in turn this could cause us just as many problems as letting everyone in. The issue about the debate forum is going to be going on for a while, but dont expect one anytime soon. We are still a new site that is still growing and we are trying to pull in new members. Just let the dust settle and we will see.

Gentlemen...

You have an overwhelming desire to have a debate forum at Short-Media. We know you do. We also know that the currently requesting users of such a forum are intelligent, creative, polite! and respectful individuals. I wouldn't doubt any of you on your ability to "debate" without resorting to flaming, profanity or poor commentary.

However..

It's been mentioned a few times in threads touching on the debate forum subject, a subject called "the Icrontic effect". Thrax, you in particular have a penchant for using such a term. The damage to a community through the providing of a new forum which CAN cause tense situations and a wars of words.

We don't want the damage. While you gentlemen may be quite able to debate on ANY subject, others are not. We gain new members everyday. We gain another step up into being a site not just built from a folding team.

Sadly, there are some blunt truths in all of this. Once bitten, twice shy? Il make no BS about it. Yes. Because not everyone has the ability to maintain a sense of intelligence when a debate touches on a highly personal subject. Then the problems start, as does the rot.

You guys don't have to pick up the pieces if it goes wrong. You guys don't have to come back if you argue and fall out with someone outside of your current "clique" (it's not unheard of on the web, no matter how set into a community a member is). If a new member outdebated you and you took offence that staff decided YOU were out of line.

The community pays the price. Sure, we can moderate it hard. We can watch every post, we can moderate queue every post and we can warn/remove access/ban those who don't comply. That isn't the answer. Pushing away members? Not really our style.

So we push you away by not adhering to your want for the debate forum? This is a primarily technical site, lull in the scene or not. This was it's intended purpose, along with being a friendly community and a kickass folding team. We don't want to turn anyone away, ban anyone, warn anyone or have to play thread police. The staff are members, just the same as you. Id rather they didn't have spend an hour just moderating threads/posts in debate. Sorry, that's a blunt truth, but it's THE truth.

I respect all your opinions, your thoughts, you skills and intelligence. Please don't feel that this is a slight of ANY of your characters, it is far from it. However, for the fledging community we are building.. a debate does not appeal. There are just too many random variables associated with that forum to convince the management here to take the idea up.

That's the bottom line and how it is.

Yeah I talked with Rob the other day as he was getting ready to shut down DF. Basicly it wasn't used as much any more so there was no reason to have it up an going. I really liked the invitation only idea though myself.

I completely agree with your "slaying" comment. A would like to add that I would only be able to bounce one quarter, before I could not contain myself any longer and I may or may not ruin the experiment with some rubbing or spanking. I would contend that she probably does like a decent spanking from time to time. I would also contend that she probably wouldn't want a spanking from me... :bawling:
