When I open Internet explorer, it starts with a blank page and a pop up ad. I ran spy-bot and ad-aware.
Please help. Thank you,

Welcome to Short Media forums.

Before doing the following, please Set your computer to show hidden files and folders (http://www.short-media.com/forum/showpost.php?p=172588&postcount=3), Disable System Restore (http://www.short-media.com/forum/showpost.php?p=172591&postcount=4), and Reboot in Safe Mode (http://www.short-media.com/forum/showpost.php?p=175908&postcount=6).

Once you have done that, Run HijackThis and have it fix the following:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\jupmz.dll/sp.html#29126
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\jupmz.dll/sp.html#29126
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about_:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\jupmz.dll/sp.html#29126

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mgvosy] C:\WINDOWS\System32\ksxahbpo.exe

Then find and locate the files listed above and Quarentine Them (http://www.short-media.com/forum/showpost.php?p=173532&postcount=5).

Once you have done that, reboot, scan with HiijackThis again, and post a new log.

Thanks, Internet Explorer starts on the correct page now, and I have not seen any of the pop ups.

I ran HiijackThis and had it fix all of the above items.

I quarantined 3 files:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\jupmz.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\sdklj32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ksxahbpo.exe

I could not find this file to quarantine:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntbi32.dll

Here is the new HiijackThis log:

I was also having trouble with notepad. None of the text documents would open. I found notepad.exe and relocated it, and now it seems to work fine.

have hijackThis fix that, then you should be all set. Once you have removed that you can re-enable System Restore.

I used HiijackThis to fix that. Internet Explorer is working well now. The only thing that doesn't work correctly now is searching from the address bar. It says page not found and the address bar looks like this:
http:///?%20can't%20search
Thank you for all your help

You can reset your home page and search settings by clicking the Tools menu -> Internet Options -> Programs -> Reset Web Settings. Then click the General Tab in that same window, and manually set whatever home page you want. Surf a few websites to make sure the hijack is gone.

If the problem returns, you may need to follow our Home Search Assistant Removal Guide. (http://www.short-media.com/forum/showthread.php?t=18315) I believe this is what you had/have, and you may become re-hijacked because of a fake service running in the background of your computer. I am going to close this thread since you indicated the problem is gone, but if it returns, follow the guide, and start a new thread if you need further help.

Please read our article on Defeating Spyware (http://www.short-media.com/review.php?r=132) for tips on how to improve your Internet Explorer security, or to learn how to switch to a different browser. For more general information about spyware read this page. (http://www.short-media.com/review.php?r=252&p=4)

You are running Windows XP, and have not yet upgraded to Service Pack 2, please do so, especially if you plan to stay on Internet Explorer. SP2 introduces some security features to help protect you from unwanted downloads in Internet Explorer. Upgrade to XP Service Pack 2 here (http://www.short-media.com/download.php?d=300), courtesy of Short-Media's downloads section.

Finally, if you have not already done so, please take the time to find out more about Folding For a Cure (http://www.short-media.com/folding.php?v=projectinfo), a good cause by which your computer uses it's spare power to help search for cures to diseases. We would love to have you on our Team.
