pc as WAP?

Anyone know if you can a old computer with a wireless card act as a WAP? Also without having to modify a linux distro for it. I barely know any linux and dont know any programming. My delimma is Id like a netgear 108Mb access point but they dont make them only routers. I already have a smoothwall box so life would be easier if I could make a 108 WAP instead of using a router with double nat and all that good stuff. Any ideas guys, thanks

I'm not a Linux guru (in fact I hardly know the first thing about drivers) but you'd have two options with a card, I think.
(a) regular drivers, ad-hoc mode to provide internet access to other computers - may be slower than 108mbps
(b) hacked drivers, infrastructure mode with the card in this box as the wireless access point

I know it's theoretically possible, as Asus wrote software to accomplish that when they put a WiFi port on their motherboards - the WiFi-B attachment Asus sells can double as a WAP, with software. I'm sure some Linux guru somewhere has made something similar...

you can do it in windows.. so you should be able to do it in linux. Config the card for adhock mode, then set the system up as a router. Configure all your clients to then point to that system as their access point. Its not the best solution but its doable. With the cost of routers today it would be far simpler to just by one. I can see why you would make your own however, as it would be neat...
