no beeps... nothing... on boot...

I just reassembled my secondary PC with the "old" XP2100+ from the primary PC, as well as a GF4Ti4200 Golden Sample. Everything else was as it had been before disassembly. The only other change was that I used AS Ceramique for the first time. I tried to boot the thing, and nothing happened. I mean, all the fans had power and the first time I booted, the Asus iPanel said "C1" or something and didn't change. I didn't hear the hard drive spin up either. A faintly ozone odor came from the case. I unplugged it and tried again, and the same thing happened, except this time nothing at all displayed on the iPanel. Neither time did I get any beeps whatsoever out of the thing during boot. I'm :banghead: here. What could be the cause of this? Nothing expensive, I hope!

Maybe you applied the AS wrong and fubar'ed the proc :( Try a spare.

Indeed, take the proc out and see if it's the source of the Ozone

As it's an Asus motherboard on mine and I have the I panel I am getting a "C1" error indicating "auto detect on-board DRAM & cache" whatever that means.


As a start, have you checked all cables, connections, etc? You might look for bent pins on the CPU...?

Well... upon removal of the CPU and inspection, I have discovered that I am the proud owner of a toasted XP2100+. This really really sucks a lot. Now I am not entirely certain what I should do with my secondary PC... I just sold off my slowest socket A processor, and I installed the XP1700+ that was in my secondary in somebody else's PC... hrm. What a waste of money!

That's a bummer, GHoosdum.:banghead: I've been fighting my rig too; my 9700 Pro went tits-up on me for no reason when I did a mobo swap. I'm going offshore tomorrow so I'll have to wait until I get back in to RMA the sucker. Right now, I have a NF7-S 2.0 with a Barton at 2300 MHz using an old Trident 2M vid card I found in a drawer.:eek2: :thumbsdow My only saving grace is that the vid card is still under warrantee.

And yes, if I win the drawing on Friday, it will more than even out. I've got a good feeling about this one... ;)

That stinks. I can't believe it would cook that fast, even with no Ceramique on there.

GHoosdum... what heatsink? It's more likely that you accidentally installed the heatsink incorrectly than used too little/too much thermal compound. "Not enough" thermal compound would be very translucent, almost clear... slightly translucent to opaque is the correct amount...

Dell, HP and the rest om the stinky pc--makers dont have any at all, not even on the higher grade chips. I opened up a HP Pavillion with a 3.0 Intel the other day and it was as clean as a babys rear. Some compound must have found its way onto the cpu and shorted it somehow or as stated above, slightly bent pins on the cpu.

From your description, it seems like I used the correct amount, then. Maybe I did install the heatsink incorrectly, because none of the pins were bent...

Ceramique is not electrically conductive like AS3 is, so it couldn't have shorted it out.

I've lost 2 Processors. One was a 1800+ and the other was a Duron 1.??. The Duron was due to a failed Fan on the heatsink and the 1800+ smoke in less than 4 seconds when a Heatsink was installed backwards (the grove was facing the wrong way so the heatsink was not totally touching the CPU). I started to smell something and could turn off the system (stupid 4 second delay power buttons) quick enough. AMD's can smoke REAL fast. Now I double check my heatsinks. I have a LianLi PC60 w/ a MB tray.... sweet. I can pull out the motherboard and attach the heatsink in just a minute or two. Bird's eye view. Smoking a CPU sucks...
