i want to know how to set up a cross over network between my pc and my bros, we bought the cable, and plugged it into the slot for it, but it doesnt work. there r no leds to tell if the card is working, cause its integrated into the MB.
both computers have windows xp, we have tried running the wizard, but nothing happens, we cant detect one another at all. when we try to add a network place nothing happens either. what do we have to do?!

First:
What are each computer's IPs?
To find out, click start --> run --> type "CMD" and then enter. At the command prompt type "IPCONFIG" and enter. Tell me what the IP is on each computer.

What kind of cable did you purchase? If you are wiring it straight from one computer's NIC to another computer NIC you'll need a "cross-over" cable. They are usually yellow as well as have "crossover" written along the length of the cable. Another thing you may want to check in each computer is device manager to ensure that both NIC's are working correctly. If either has a yellow exclamation point or a red X there is a problem. What kind of internet access do you have and how is it getting to the computer with internet access? Do you have two network cards in the computer with internet access or does the internet access come via a USB interface or 56k modem or another method? Exactly what wizard did you try? The one for internet connection sharing or another one? Also, are you familiar with the ping command? Get a command prompt as described in prime's post and then try to ping the other computers' IP address. Type "ping {insert IP address here}". There are a lot of variables and hurdles that could prevent the two from talking to each other.

1st:
my info:
ip: 64.10.91.7
subnet: 255.255.255.255
default gateway: 64.10.91.7
2nd:
we bought a cross over cable from microbytes, and the only thing i have under network adapters is a 1394 connectio, no exclamation, or X. the internet is a 56k modem, going thru a modem card on each pc, the 1394 connection is part of the motherboard. for the wizard, we did the ones under network neighbour hood, add network place, and we also tried setup a network
hope this helps
