I went out and bought a Netgear MR814 4-Port Cable/DSL Wireless Router(802.11b)

Using a Linksys Wireless-B USB Network Adapter also 802.11b of course.

I have never used Wireless before, it just took me 2 hours to get the wireless network to work on my roomates PC. Everything works, but I do not want to have others connecting to my network and using MY(err OUR) Bandwidth ;)

Or hacking of course.

Other then changing the password to get into the router, what can I do to ensure more safety?

Well, you can turn off the SSID broadcast, use 128bit WEP, and change the default channel for starters.

You ARE using WEP, right? :)

I have no idea what WEP is... but I think I am using it.

If you had to type in a password to connect to your SSID, then you're using WEP. Or if you had to type in a massive 26-character hex code to connect, you're definitely using WEP :)

'Open system' or 'shared key' better?

Unique SSID
WEP
Unique channel
Unique frequency

OK I put it all in and stuff, I think I got it secured.

Open means anyone can log on and steal your bandwidth

Shared key means you have to give people a key to connect - that 26 digit hex code I was talking about
