Downloaded RegCleaner from Downloads but...

Hi, I downloaded RegCleaner 4.3 from the General Utilities in the download section. I went to install it but SP2's security warning said it doesn't have a valid signature. Since I got it from here I thought it would be ok so what should I do? Also, I want to try and boost my comps performance as it can be sluggish at times so at the performance optimizing section in downloads you have bootvis 1.3, what does that do and can I use it?

bootvis only speeds up bootup time so it wont help with overall performance.

Bootvis reorganizes your boot loader to make startup faster. This application is Microsoft’s way of saying... "OK, we know that the way we load the operating system sucks, so here's a fix that works on your specific system not our target system."


!! MAKE SURE ALL APPLICATIONS ARE CLOSED !!
Launch Bootvis... Check the "Disk Utilization" then select the "Trace" menu, select "Next Boot + Driver Delays". a popup window will appear. Click "OK and the system will reboot.

When the system come back up (login if necessary) and wait until Bootvis launches. Don't do anything until then... it make take a few minutes. When Bootvis appears, it will have a nice little chart/graph. Select the "Trace" menu again and this time select the "Optimize System"... let the system reboot. This time, after the system is back up (login if necessary, but you know that) walk away for a while.... the Bootvis is starting to reorganize the boot loader and such. This step takes the longest. Again, sit back and relax and don't touch the PC. After that, you system should be faster when it starts up.

My history... Worse case, trim 5 seconds off of start up times. Best case, trim 30 to 40 seconds. I can get new Dells to boot in around 20 Seconds.

QCH2002 appreciate the images and clear instructions on how 2 use bootvis :) but my comp windows loads within 10 seconds lol, Thanks :thumbsup:

The reason I asked if theres anything which can help boost performance is because sometimes it takes about 5 or so seconds to open a folder/file or software e.g. ms word.

First off... I deal with systems that have some weird components on them and Bootvis can take a system that boots at about 1 minute and trim that to 25 seconds. You are lucky to have 10 seconds from power to login...

As for the other problem... spyware or fagmeneted hard drive, could also be your PATH statement is messed up....

well, its Definitely not spyware or anything malicious, i'm sure about that. What do you mean fagmented? Would that require to do Disk Defrag?

Disk Defrag... yes. Before doing though, make sure temp files are deleted and the recycling box is empty...

I ran Disk Defrag about 2 weeks but I never knew that temp files and recycle bin were meant 2 be empty, thanks for the tip.

a dumb question but how do I delete files from the temp folder? Would I need to run Disk Cleanup?

There are several places that "Temp" files are located. With WinXP... each profile has a 2 temp directories "C:\Documents and Settings\(username)\Local Settings" then the "TEMP" and the "Temporary Internet Files" can be emptied (do it manually since IE doesn't always clear everything). In the Windows directory, there is a TEMP folder also. You can also delete everything in prefetch folder also (C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch).

Then run the windows Disk Cleanup. By doing some manual work first, the "Disk Cleanup" will go faster and you will get more junk.

FYI... Make sure you close all applications when you are cleaning to avoid errors trying to delete a file that an application is using.

Thanks. can I ask if its safe to delete everything in both 'Temp' and 'Temprary Internet Files'?

I'v found the folders and deleted 157 files which were in temp.

Normally, Id say yes but it is at your risk. I do it several times a week on PC's that I'm repairing...

I'v deleted 157 files from the Temp folder and deleted cookies and other stuff which were in the Temporary Inter Files Folder on my account. I'm going to delete all files in those folders for the other user accounts and then run Disk Cleanup ans Disk Defrag.
