Phew! If you are reading this now, it means that I didn't fry my bios & generally cock my computer up!!
I just, on one of those stupid whims we get from time to time, decided to update my motherboard bios.
It's an Asus A7V266-e, and it came with a handy little program called 'Asus Update', allowing you to update the bios in Windows. So, I tried to download a new bios update automatically through the software. The asus.com.tw and asus.com servers both did not respond, but the asus.de one did, with some strange German words.
You'd think that after 12 months in the beautiful land they call Deutschland I'd be able to understand what it said. But no, I slung it into the Google translator, only to be informed that the version of Asus Update I was using was old and not used anymore.
So, I blindly and stupidly thought (in one of those moments of brilliance) I'll download the latest update from their website, and use the other option the app provides and install from the hard drive. It never occurred to me that there should be a reason not to use this version anymore.
So I did, and it seemed to go in. 'Please restart your machine', and so I did, and it restarted, and.... it wouldn't boot into Windows.
'Nooooooo' I screamed in a melodramatic voice, and restarted . Bugger all. 'Sh!t, I need to alter some bios settings' I thought (anyone notice how when we do something stupid and break something, we try to fix it by doing even stupider things!?)
So, I try all sorts of things, even changing setting I never knew were there. After 6 attempts at fannying around with it, I decided to do the good old 'cold boot'. I switched off, left it, went into setup, changed everything back to how I thought it should be, and....
Here I am, obviously in Windows, typing away with sheer joy and happiness .
