Links not opening in tabs

I use Firefox and am having this problem. I've searched through all the settings but can't find any way to change it. Seems like links used to open up a new tab but now they always open up a new window. What's the deal?

Ok so if you hold down the ctrl key when clicking on a link it WILL open in a tab. I didn't think it used to be that way.

you can also middle click.

FWIW some kind of javascript linky thingies don't open in tabs.
