Need help overclocking a 9700 Pro!

First of all, I have no cooling on the memory and the stock cooler on the gpu, but this is just rediculous.

I just started trying to overclock this to possibly break 2000 on 3DMark '05.
Downloaded ATiTool:
Memory sees artifacts just above stock, like 312 MHz or so. :wtf:
Core gets artifacts at ~332
Stock speeds are 325/310

So... WTF?! :scratch:

I think Asus probe is getting MB temp wrong because I have 2 intake fans in an air conditioned room. It reports 95*F. (35*C)

What rail is responsible for video cards? I think it's either the 3.3v or 5v rail right?? Is +3.15 - 3.2v good for the 3.3v? 5v rail reads 5.16.

Any suggestions? I think something's wrong here because I never get artifacts while gaming and ati tool gets them just above normal speeds. :bawling: :wtf:

Well, first off, your rails are pretty good. Not excellent, but consistency is what's the most important. If they don't waver much (going from idle to load) then you're ok at those levels.

Second, I don't know why it has such low tolerance levels. I don't know much about 9700 pros ... maybe it's either just a weak core, or the entire 9700 line of cores are that poor. Maybe someone else could help here ... ?

Last, I wouldn't worry about overclocking your video card. I did. Even my crappy r350 core could [barely] pull XT speeds. Guess how much performance increase I noticed? If I didn't have ATiTool and it's little graph thing ... I wouldn't of known. It produced slight instabilities with the card. And maybe 1 FPS. So, unless you can achieve MASSIVE (40 or 50 mhz) overclocks, don't bother. It's unneeded stress on the card. Hope that helps some, even if it wasn't what you wanted to here :p.

personally i've had nice experiences O/Cing ATI cards (my own 9600np went from 324/189 to 439/208 or so) but my buddy's 9800pro got 3 mhz on the core and 2 mhz on the memory.. i guess it varies with the card.. of course additional cooling would probably help... mine didnt o/C all that well on the original passive cooler. the cpu hsf on there helps heaps

my 9800 pro is overclocked at 407/383 from 380/340

but, it's watercooled. before watercooling, it would barely overclock any.

Right now I barely have my 9700 oc'ed. I had it higher (right now it's 330 and 312), but I'd sometimes get artifacts when I start up. If I put it any higher than what it's at right now, it will freak out as soon as I start up a game like BF1942. All you can do is get better cooling, which I will do myself as soon as I feel the real need to.
