"....within this tutorial you will find, in order, the steps required to take any NTSC DVD disc and convert to a high-quality DiVX edition that can fit on 1-4 CDs as you choose. More specifically, this tutorial will outline how to produce a DiVX copy with 5.1 AC3 audio encoding at a DVD bitrate, as well as a picture that has a resolution that bears the same dimensions as its DVD-counterpart. "

Thrax continues to teach us everything we need to know. Read all about it here. (http://www.short-media.com/review.php?r=162)

Aye good article tried doing this to xvid a while back using a quite simple tutorial and still managed to totally screw something up, with this i should be able to actually rip nicely.

After my promised DVD2DVD-R, I shall do XViD methinks.

That would be great :)

I've been playing around with XViD a LOT lately, and I've got it down to basically 700mb = DVD quality with 6 channel dolby audio.

That is copyright infringement of both Short-Media and its author (Thrax).

The article would work for PAL fine, but I suggest waiting for my more comprehensive tutorial that works with both PAL and NTSC equally.

The thief is one dumb ****er, to tell you the truth.

First, he dates the article for August 4th, 2004, which was the current Australian date when it was posted.

But then, right below that, is the Short-Media double solid-lined frame dating the article at August 8th, 2003. Retards.

lol. now THAT'S what I call entertaining revenge lol. the tutorial was easy to follow although the link to the
DivX4 Bitrate Calculator by Spark
seemed to be broken :(. ok, not necesarily broken but they wouldn't let me have it and i hate registering for sites that i couldn't care less about :P. I registered here cause i had to pop off a reply for that revenge comment of yours lol.

any ways, as to the quality of the the tutorial... I won't be able to say untill i see the outcome of my efforts. (28.7% so far.) The first movie i did (i just played around untill it played with out skipping on the sound) came out just fine. this movie though, i encrypted it the first time and it came out alright for some of it... then i fast fowarded to the middle of the movie and it seemed to lag on sound vs mouth movement (like a american cheesed chinese film (haha amarican CHEESED!! heheh).

so i searched and found your tutorial and thuss...here we are.

as i move to press POST i sit at 30% even. weeeeeee

I've been playing around with XViD a LOT lately, and I've got it down to basically 700mb = DVD quality with 6 channel dolby audio.
Interesting. How is the quality, say, compared to Nero Digital MPEG-4? I have been using the nero digital encoder to do the 6+GB>700MB conversion, maintaining the dolby digital channels, subtitles, and maybe one other additonal audio channel (2.0 stereo sp?).

I have been doing this with anime series lately. No, it does not have menus however, the the quality is outstanding. Of course, the less you pack, the more quality you attain.

The longer the movies, then you start to sacrifice quality, that is if you are like me and just want to deal with one disk. The LOTR series...forget about it as far as one disk is concerned. However, I was able to convert all 3 of the series (non-extended) to 1.5GB+/- files with the DD channel and no subtitles onto one DVD+R. Even moreso on a DL disk.

If you have a compatible set-top dvd player, it's as good as gold when it comes to marathons.
