2x 40gb (2 meg cache) maxtor Diamondmax 60's in Hardware raid 0.

The drives are empty :/

This is without the latency patch, because when I installed it, the scores went down. They look kinda low... but i'm not sure.
Sandra scores look normal.

Reads look okay...the writes seem low but even my writes are low.

Your write speed is quite low.

You can compare your raid setup with my two WD's here.
Click here (http://www.short-media.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=668)

Your reading outperforms my single drives by far.
But your write speed is only two thirds of mine.

BTW disregard the top picture in my thread, that was before I found my driver cd.

your writes are way to low...do u know what stripe/cluster size u used?...i get around 63-66MB/s both read/write with my WD 40gb 2mb using 16k/16k stripe/clusters raid-0

that was 64/64

Re-did them with 16/16, and got this

Definitely, they're low. Check this out: this is an array (16/16 FAT32) of 2 x 30GB Maxtors 6E030L0 ($30 ea. AR at Staples) 2MB cache drives attached to the SATA ports via 2 x RocketHead adapters w/o any tweaks what so ever...

lol...now that we've determined that my atto's are in fact low, does anyone have any suggestions?

Powerstrip maybe if the latency patches aren't working for ya. Try some other cluster/stripe sizes also. 32/32? 8/8?

shwaip...what raid controller u using?

shwaip

I tried 32/32, and the results are about the same

FatCat:

I'm using the onboard raid controller on my 8k3a+ (HPT372)

ok, r u using the 2.34 bios/drivers? are ur diamondmx 60's ata100 or ata66? 5400/7200?

im trying to eliminate any basic reasons first

they are ata100, 7200 rpm

I'm about to restart, so I can check bios version there. I updated it not too long ago...but still gotta check :)

ok... they are both 2.32. I'll update them and check back :)

ok.... the latest version of the drivers/bios on epox's site are 2.32. When I went to the highpoint site, it said that I should not use the 2.34 drivers/bios from that site, but should get them from the manufacturer of the mobo. Does it matter?

In my opinion... no. Use any 2.34's you can get your hands on.

shwaip

no it doesn't matter....or no I shouldn't do it :D ?

Sorry I edited my post too late... The ones on the Highpoint site will be fine. Use any 2.34's you can get your hands on.

OK :)

Also, I just swapped my cables to see if they were the problem, and there was no improvement :/

fatcat
9 Aug 2003, 4:29am
yea with highpoint you want to make sure the bios/drivers match...in this case it would be the 2.34 set...

the problem i think ur gonna run into is how to update the highpoint bios with an integrated raid controller. i used to do it with a modified bios, because mobo manufactures are slow at updating the highpoint bios with their own bios set..

do some google searchs for some modified bios(ie lastest mobo bios with latest highpoint bios) for ur mobo. cause i dont think what spinner said will work with integrated raid controllers unless he knows a secret i dont know about ;)

Just tried the highpoint flash util... didn't work. It would not flash at all :/

Will look for a modded bios FatCat :)

Spinner

The Highpoint flash utility is just for PCI cards, or other external Highpoint based chips. You just need to mod your motherboard BIOS with 2.34. Then simply reflash the motherboard BIOS. Easy as that.

Just send me a copy of your current motherboard BIOS file and I'll mod it for you. spinnerNOGODDAMBSPAM@zoom.co.uk (Remove the NOGODDAMBSPAM)

I found one online. Thx for the offer tho spinner.

Here's what they look like after bios/driver update:

I'll try the latency patch again... maybe something odd just happened that time.

shwaip

with the via latency patch

Spinner

Hmm... Try benching in safe mode, also, if you haven't already, run a full defrag, then bench again.

Have you got anything else plugged into the Highpoint Controller? Latest mobo chipset drivers?

EDIT: Sorry, and also, what position are the jumpers set on those drives? and each drive is on their own individual channel, IDE 3 and 4 correct?

shwaip
9 Aug 2003, 6:53am
Yea, both master on their own channels. Nothing else on them. I have the latest drivers for the mobo. Those are with the drive empty.

I'm beginning to wonder if one of the drives isn't a little fubared. After I finish fixing my dad's drive, and get his, I'll back up my stuff, break the stripe, and bench each individually.

btw, those atto's are with _nothing_ else running

If when you said 'both master' you meant they are both set to masters, then I might suggest you change both their settings to Cable select instead. But yea, that's a good idea, break the stripe and test the drives individually.

Keep us posted.

(not trying to second guess, just n00balicious)

Why would having the jumpers set to cable select instead of master make a difference?

Spinner
9 Aug 2003, 10:14pm
Master should only really be used when an actual slave is present, Cable select is the default setting for your setup, it shouldn't really make a difference, but in some cases it can, some controllers and HD types don't work as well if the jumper settings aren't exactly right.

hi :usflag:
i plan on getting this kt600 epox board replacing msi kt3 ultra2-r
[given the kt880 doesnt pop up :grumble: ]
it has hpt372 raid controller

would the pci latency still be an issue with via 8237

could anybody link me to a guide /tutor how to setup raid0

im a photoshopoholic using pix file sizes ranging from 3-25mb
what stripe size etc..
would be the optimal recommended values

also im running 98lite  http://www.litepc.com/
what version via 4 in 1

the new bios has cpu/ram settings im unfamiliar with

im probably getting either ocz perf 512mb
or corsair xms 2-3-3-6-1t

id love 400 bus xp3000
most likely  2800/333 i am poor

thanks in advance i hope :wtf:

Or, you could get you know, a halfway decent board.

And of course, a halfway decent board rules out anything with a Via chipset.

How about a NF7-S?
