View Full Version : This is really interesting

Infrared photography (http://www.bigbruin.com/html/thermal_images.htm) reveals hot spots, some REALLY hot, on an Asus A7N8X motherboard and Radeon 9700 video card.
Comments? I suppose this is as good as any time to start a discussion on for what components (chips) does an overclocker need to supply extra cooling.
get a 404 error....
i know the cpu, gpu, and mosfets get pretty darn hot. note abits new max3 design where they include active cooling to certain areas of the mobo.

Link fixed.
Very interesting Leo!
Interesting, but not surprising. Go touch random chips on a motherboard while it's on after it's been running a while (not a good idea, but...) some small, nondescript chips get damn hot...

I`d love to have a tool like that, wonder how much it costs?
you can get IR filters for regular old cameras for less than $100 I think...

Even for digitals? That actually work?
In that case, iŽll have one straight away. Damn what a useful tool.

I looked up for that Mitec (or whatever it was that was used in that article) and it alot of $$$$..
I think so... I'll ask my dad when he gets home if I remember... he likes photography...

That's the A7N8X Deluxe motherboard there... it also happens to be my motherboard... maybe I'll start sticking some heatsinks all over the hotspots and see what happens...:eek3:

I never knew things got that hot during operation. Probably explains why the northbridge system temp sensor in the KD7-RAID says it is 122oF

GH... it's an A7N, not an A7V...

Geeky: I really really meant to write "N" when I posted. Because that's what it is, and that's what I have. For some reason, A7V8X was stuck in my head. I dunno why... besides, Via's chipset doesn't hold a candle to Nvidia's!

As for the photos, there are two easy options.
1. 35mm with IR film with a filter, or just a dark room.
2. Sony digital cam corder with 'night shot' mode. Cover the IR lamp so you only will see the mobo.
If I get around to it I'll take a couple and post them.

Wonder if keeping these cool would help performance any..

If I get an IR filter can I... see through walls? ;)
Only if whatever's on the other side has enough radiated heat to penetrate solid wood, cement-board, drywall, etc.
Doubtful. :D

Not walls, but you can see through wet swim suits, or so I have been told.
