hi all just joined the forum as i got to know about how good it is from a friend - the problem ive got is the www.popuppers.com is popping up all the time even when im not on the net also other pop ups are appearing when they never used to, also ive tried running loads of spyware programmes and my anti virus with no effect. in the past i would run a system restore to a known ok date but now the system wont restore when i try it, i dont know if the popuppers is disabling my system restore or not??
ive read a couple of posts with the same problem but im not sure how to -

get a list of my running processes with my hijack log
and im not sure how to fix the entries when im given them in a post from the moderator or whoever is trying to help me.

Start HJT & with all browser windows closed, press the scan button. When the scan is finished the scan button will change to save. Save the log to a text file, copy the entire contents of the text file & paste it into the body of your post.
Make sure that the hijackthis.exe is in a permanent folder too.
When fixing, there is a box to the left of all entries. You will be asked to place a check in the appropriate box.

get a list of my running processes with my hijack log

From the above in your first post I assumed that you already had hijackthis on your PC. You must download it and unzip it into a permanent folder.
Create a new folder on your desktop by right clicking on it and choosing; New/folder. Name it hijackthis.
Download hijackthis from here; http://www.zerosrealm.com/downloads/hjt.zip and direct it into the folder you just created. Run it from there.

That is maybe the biggest collection of spy/malware I've seen :).
What I will get you to do is download a couple of automated spyware removal tools, install and run them, then post another log when you have done. Please follow the instructions exactly.

1. Download and install Ad-Aware SE, (http://computercops.biz/downloads-file-292.html) keeping the default options. However, some of the settings will need to be changed before your first scan

2.Close ALL windows except Ad-Aware SE

3. Click on the‘world’ icon at the top right of the Ad-Aware SE window and let AdAware SE update the reference list for the adware and malware.

4. Once the update is finished click on the ‘Gear’ icon (second from the left at the top of the window) to access the preferences/settings window

1) In the ‘General’ window make sure the following are selected in green:
*Automatically save log-file
*Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
*Safe Mode (always request confirmation)

Under Definitions:
*Prompt to udate outdated definitions - set the number of days

2) Click on the ‘Scanning’ button on the left and select in green :

Under Driver, Folders & Files:
*Scan Within Archives

Under Select drives & folders to scan -
*choose all hard drives

Under Memory & Registry: all green
*Scan Active Processes
*Scan Registry
*Deep Scan Registry
*Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
*Scan my Hosts file

3) Click on the ‘Advanced’ button on the left and select in green:

Under Shell Integration:
*Move deleted files to recycle bin

Under Logfile Detail Level: (all green)
*include addtional object information
*DESELECT - include negligible objects information
*include environment information

Under Alternate Data Streams:
*Don't log streams smaller than 0 bytes
*Don't log ADS with the following names: CA_INOCULATEIT

4) Click the ‘Tweak’ button and select in green:

Under the ‘Scanning Engine’:
*Unload recognized processes during scanning
*Scan registry for all users instead of current user only

Under the ‘Cleaning Engine’:
*Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot

Under the Log Files:
*Include basic Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
*Include additional Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
*Please do not check or make green: Include Module list in logfile

5. Click on ‘Proceed’ to save the settings.

6. Click ‘Start’

*Choose:'Perform Full System Scan'
*DESELECT "Search for negligible risk entries", as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.

7. Click ‘Next’ and Ad-Aware SE will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected and clean automatically.

8. If Ad-Aware SE finds bad entries, you will receive a list of what it found in the window

9. Save the log file when it asks and then click ‘finish’

10. REBOOT to complete the removal of what Ad-Aware SE found

Download & instal Spybot S&D 1.3 from here. (http://www.computercops.biz/zx/phoenix22/spybotsd13.zip) Update it before scanning.
After the scan is complete, have spybot fix everything marked RED.
On the page that first opens when you start Spybot there is an option to immunise, you should do this. In the immunise section there is also a link to download Spywareblaster. This program will prevent the install of bad activex controls that it has knowledge of. Download that & you can keep it updated by selecting the same link that you use to download it. Reboot

Go here (http://housecall.trendmicro.com/) to TrendMicro for an on-line scan & set it to autoclean for you.

Try this (http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm) scan at Panda as well.

When you have rebooted, close all browser windows, rescan with hijackthis and post that log back here.

All of the entries I listed above are the ones you want to fix. The O16 entries do not have a file on your computer to delete, so don't waste your time searching your computer for those files.

Hi, I'm back :). First up, the 016 entries are installed on your computer. They are found in your Windows folder inside the Downloaded Program Files folder. Hijackthis deletes them from that folder :). All 016 entries can be deleted as they will be reinstalled the next time you visit the relevant page. Get spywareblaster to prevent the installation of the nasty ones. www.javacoolsoftware.com

Now, open up task manager by right clicking on the task bar or hitting Ctrl, Alt and Delete together. Under the processes Tab, end process on the following;
Save.exe
ewupdater.exe

Then you need to delete them manually by going to C:\Program Files and deleting the Save folder and going to C:\WINDOWS and deleting the ewupdater.exe file.

Close all Internet Explorer windows, this one too, and have hijackthis fix these;

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WhenUSave] C:\Program Files\Save\Save.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ewupdater] C:\WINDOWS\ewupdater.exe

If you cannot find any of them to delete, go to Control Panel\Folder Options and under the View Tab set it to show hidden files\folders.

Reboot and post another log please.

That backups folder is hijackthis'. Do not delete until you know your computer is running fine.
Did you reboot after doing what I asked? I need to be sure that those files do not return.

hi - yes i did everything you said what do i do now m8

Crunchie
1 Nov 2004, 10:13am
Nothing :). Looks clean as a whistle to me :).
Actually, you can double check to make sure that all the items that you had hijackthis fix already are really gone. Hijackthis only deletes the registry entries relating to those 04 entries. The files\folders themselves need to be deleted by you. I haven't got the time to go through them all myself.

Keeps those programs updated that I had you download and run Adaware and Spybot weekly. Go here for info on how to increase the security of Internet Explorer. http://bshagnasty.home.att.net/browsersettings.htm
Use a different browser :).
