once again, Texas has no chance of going to a BCS bowl. shows you what being #5 gets you.

but just to show that I'm not totally bitter

Props to Utah for doing what couldn't be done
Props to Florida for winning one for the Zooker (eat that Florida AD)
Props to Iowa for showing the world that wisconsin really isn't that good (with a 5th string running back no less!)
and Props to Ohio State for trying to crush Michigan's dreams, even though they're still going to the Rose Bowl

They need a real playoff. Eight teams would be about right. (Let's face it, if you finish ninth it's kind of hard to crab about being left out.) Your Longhorns are currently ranked 5th and would play the 4th ranked team in the first round, at the Fiesta Bowl, for instance.

I know the polls will be different by tomorrow, due to Saturday's games, but right now the matchups would look like this:

#1 USC vs. #8 (whoever replaces FSU, who lost Saturday)
#2 Oklahoma vs. #7 (whoever replaces Michigan, who also lost Saturday) :D
#3 Auburn vs. #6 Utah
#4 California vs. #5 Texas

Now that would make for an exciting New Years Day!

I know some people whine about the poor "students" playing all those extra games, but consider this:

They could incorporate the first round into the existing bowl system. Four of the eight playoff teams (the first-round losers) would play no extra games at all, just their regular bowl game. Of the remaining four teams, two (the second-round losers) would play just one extra game. The two teams meeting for the undisputed National Championship would be playing two extra games.

Expand it to sixteen teams and you would have eight teams playing one extra game, four teams playing two extra games, and two teams playing three extra games. If you are 17th in the nation and miss out, well... :bawling:

Look at where he's from! He's not talking smack - he's miffed that his team is ranked 5th but misses out on one of the eight BCS slots.

If you meant me, my idea would leave them with a shot at the National Championship. :)

Unless Thrax is right and by "smack" you mean... :hitit2: :eek2:

;D ;D

at least the BCS is creative about finding ways to prevent a top 6 Texas from going to a BCS Bowl.

Last year? K State pulls a miracle upset in the Big 12 Championship so OU gets the at large bid

This year? Cal gets the at large bid, and Utah goes because they're a non-conference team.

oh well, as long as we beat the Aggies :D

Props to Auburn for winning some tough SEC games too.

Yeah, playoffs would be much better. I'm pretty tired of having to see how many fractions of a point we are above Auburn each week, and having it all based on the whims of voters and an enigmatic computer system. There's no mystery to a playoff system, and no excuses. I think it's a matter of time before we have one.

Me too, I can't wait until they come to their senses and institute a playoff system. I sure hate it that LSU had to share a portion of their crown with someone else. An LSU-USC game last year would have been mighty good. Until they do institute it there will be controversies like this that will arise.

Screwed out of the BCS? I doubt it.

Besides, if they can't win their own conference, they shouldn't be in a BCS game.

Heres a link that might give you some hope. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?page=roadtobcs/1121

Also, don't give Iowa props like its something out of the ordinary. No one seems to give the big 10 credit for being a good conferance. MSU is a VERY explosive team, Michigan is powerful every year. Iowa is the most well coached team in the country. We all know about OSU and minnesota too. Its not the BEST conferance(the SEC is just rediculously good), but its far more deep than the big 12, and the Pac 10. The ACC has 2 maybe 3 good teams. Look at the big 10's bowl records over the past 10 years. 36-28

No other conferance has a winning percantage that high. And no, its not because they play WAC teams or JuCo's(cough*nebraska*cough*)

Michigan shared their title with Iowa. Should they be disqualified too? ;)

Yes..Yes they should :D.

Was a great weekend for me, bucks beat michigan and the Bengals played a damn good game. Would have been even better if they would have beat the steelers. Though I am going down to see the bengals stomp the browns this coming sunday.

I don't give the Big10 credit for being really great because they are consistently overrated every year. I can pretty much bet on Michigan being ranked No. 7 or 8 every year, OSU up in the top 10 and the rest of the conference being in the upper teens and twenties somewhere.

I agree with most of what you say about conference strength other than the Big 12. If you are talking about this year being weak then yes, but historically no. The Big 12 North is crappy, Iowa State can win it  All the traditional powers, Nebraska, K-State and Colorado are all down for different reasons. The South is pretty tough with the exception of Baylor.

Still a little bitter about '97 are we ;D

Also, Texas, beat Oklahoma then you can talk about going to a BCS game. Otherwise stick to the Cotton or Holiday bowl.
