Ok, this movie was in the late 80's and I saw it on TV.
Initially, it starts off with this programmer writing a program that learns for a computer. The first thing the computer learns is how to produce the bark of a dog that it heard, and it scares the dog and it urinates in the house, but leaves the house. Later the computer gets smarter and does stuff like a rave party (nobody is in the house but itself), and the neighbors complain, and when they complain, he turns it off. The computer uses a lamp as its eye, and also, another thing it does it take over a few things. Later on, the computer decides to commit suicide sending a million volt surge to the house (and subsequently putting San Francisco in a blackout). At the end of the movie, the computer takes over a radio station and plays the favorite song of the man and his girlfriend.

The other thing is that it isn't on DVD, it is on VHS only and $80 at Buy.com because it is meant as a rental only.

The thing about the DVD is it isn't R1, it is UK R2, and PAL at that, and I don't own a VCR, and have no intention of owning a VCR.

This most likely means it is a bootleg, or they took the VHS tape and burned it to DVD,

If you don't own/plan on owning a VCR, and you can't find a R1 dvd elsewhere...and you really want to see the movie, does it really matter?

Well, I am also bidding on one of the NTSC VHS tapes over at ebay for $4.00 (I'll have to watch it on someone's VCR, or rent one)
man, you don't have a VCR?? How do you tape shows off TV, I CANT MISS 'THE OC' when I'm at work on thursdays :D
/me hides.
but seriously, VCRs are wicked cheap, we just picked up a 4-head Panasonic for $60, because our old 4Head Panasonic died after like 6 years of operation, paid like a couple hundred for it back then.

I don't own a VCR because I consider them outdated technology. I am waiting to buy a DVD recorder when the particular JVC brand I want goes under or near $200.
Yes, that was Electric Dreams.
The song from the rave party was "Let It Run" by Jeff Lynne. I found it on Kazaa.
