View Full Version : SM LAN 2005 - The First Thread

It's time. Time to start the excitement building, and the anticipation for the 5-6 month wait before the next SM LAN.
I called Deebe's today, and found out that George is selling the place :eek3:
He hasn't found a buyer yet... The insane, twisted, and masochistic entrepreneur in me wants to buy it, and open a gaming cafe and use the basement for sarcnet and short-media corporate offices. Not that I've thought about it in much detail or anything :eek3:
But as things stand now, SM LAN 05 will NOT be held at Deebe's..... So step 1 is securing a location. Which we will very likely have to pay for :(
Let's start with the dates.
I'm thinking June 17-19, 2005. This would be after finals for most of the college students, and after school ends for you parents of elementary/middle school-age kids.

bah, my finals are in april.

8 Dec 2004, 2:16am
I could pull that off (date-wise) :). If it's in Michigan... I mightmightmight be able to go. Maybe I could get my mom to take Mike (Mc.Dubs) and me, and have his parents get us. Or something. If it was closer, it'd be cool, but I realize (and understand) that a good location is hard, and that I don't have much say ;D. I really want to try to get there, though.
If it's going to be in the Midwest (which now seems up in the air) I'd prefer a weekend when I'm still in Illinois, more like sometime in May. But I doubt that applies to anyone else...

8 Dec 2004, 2:23am
Well if I'm still planning it, it will be in michigan, that much I can tell you.
Entropy, you're practically next door! Why, you're just a lake-hop and a four hour drive away! ;D
although hopping the lake may prove to be problematic.......
Definitly excellent dates for me.

OH! Dude!! I totally forgot. I'll have my license by January (should have it already, but that's another story...). I could drive there myself! And Mike! So all I'd need is permission . Bo-frickin'-nus.

You can. Just think happy thoughts. And jump out a second story window...
(What a great lesson to teach our kids, hey?)

hahah yeah, the first time the kids watched Peter Pan (the new one) me and the wife paused the movie and we're like "DON'T DO THAT - This is just a movie! It's fake! You can't really fly!" as they sat there all wide-eyed at that part..... ;D
YES! finally the talk of the ultimate fragalicious ( is that a word? ) lan party.
I don't care where it is, I will be there baby :) as long as someone can pick me up from the airport :D
Entropy, you have to be there, and that is the bottom line ;D
If we have to rent a place, that is fine. I'm sure we can raise enough money, we got a good group on our hands.

Damn, it will be moving time around that weekend. I think our current one is up the last week of June so we will have to move into a new one a little bit before that.
OOH! OOH! I go to the states in April on business every year. No firm dates yet (It'll be for a week) but if the LAN timing is right, I could just tack a few days on my trip and hop over, assuming we're not going to San Diego or something. No location set yet, it changes every year.

I ran those dates by my mom. FRICKING YEAH! So long as it's in the summer, looks like I have a fairly good chance of going. She said we'll bring Mike, and then they can go do stuff with my bro and make a weekend of it. Probably has to be only a 4 or 5 hour drive, though. Won't let me drive myself there . I am not entirely certain about June dates - my family reunion is sometime in June this year, so one week (I don't know what week) in June is out for me. The only other time that is out is August. May or July are definitely OK for me.
Brian, do you have any places up there that are already set up as coffee and gamer bars? I could imagine a place like that being a suitable location - and some would even have rigs that folks could rent if they have to travel too far...

I've driven all around the NYC Metro area, and I can say, without a shred of doubt, that MI drivers are by far the worst. They speed, they don't signal, they change lanes without looking.
As a seasoned NYC driver, I can say this with confidence.

Well Team Nexlia and I can look into seeing about hosting one down here at the Gaming Shop in Milford... It's big enough to accomodate as many people that were at the last place and they even have some good computers that can be rented for people that didn't feel like bringing their own rig. Cincinnati Area would also be a more central location for Clutch and the rest of the Southern S-M peeps... Thoughts?
Well... the thought from 6 months ago was that Brian was in charge of the SM-LAN and it will need to be up to him to determine if the location needs to be moved or of he wants to hand over the logicistic of the event to someone else...

I just need a significant amount of money to make this happen at deebe's
I really don't know what to do because having it at another location will involve paying for space, and that means we either go without shirts or pay more, and I want to avoid this if at all possible
My preference is that we forgo the shirts in favor of getting this thing going...
I would say that $30 for everyone (I would chip in $10 extra for a shirt). If someone wants a shirt, then they pay extra. $30 per person x 50 people = $1,500.
I'm not sure how far that would go, but it's something to consider.
(Again, not butting in, just offering my opinion)

Ohhhh....
I know you had talked about buying it. When you mentioned it today I thought maybe they were still open to the idea of a rental.
Maybe I'll buy a lottery ticket this week. :mullet:
Is Deebe's still open, or is he going to close the doors on it soon? I was just wondering if we needed to rent out deebe's or not. I would pitch in extra for a shirt myself, not a problem. I also like the idea of everyone paying a set amount to go, this way we can have money to either rent out a place, or get shirts, whatever the case may be.
primesuspect
4 Mar 2005, 6:42pm
It's not a question of renting out deebe's, it's a question of is deebe's even going to be there. I can't plan on anything at deebe's - the only guarantee is if I actually end up buying the place.
So in that regard, I guess it's time to start looking for an alternative venue :( I'll start checking places out this weekend
(prime house... we can fit 20 in the basement, another 20 in the first floor, and 5 0r 10 in the garage... )
Good luck... Find us a nice place.

We really could have it at my house, honestly. I have room for about 30 people in the basement, and I could fit another 10-15 in the great room... :eek3:

Can't be worse that Deebe's power and heat issue.... ;D
I can just see 30 extention cords, network lines.... Mike and I will be over on Wednesday to drill holes in the floors and walls for wiring and ventilation.... ;D
I crack me up.... :D
Maybe I'm looking at this to simplistic BUT what's wrong with planning on holding the thing at DeeBee's and then if he shutters, sells the place, etc.. using Casa De Prima as an alternative location.
You may hate to do it BUT you could always put a cap on the number of attendees.
I'm pretty sure I'm missing something simple but I'm on one of my staff's PC right now and the freakin' resolution is like 640x480! Arghhhhh! Reading this board is next too impossible.
And maybe like DeeBee's is not an option, changing her resolution is NOT ONE EITHER :shakehead

I just can't commit to a place that "might not" be there by the time the summer rolls around. People will be buying plane tickets, driving, planning weekends off, etc. all to come to this, and I have to be 100% sure that it will be there.

Maybe we should put up a poll asking people what they would spend to attend The Lan. It might make prime's search for a venue easier if he had a budget in mind.
I can go as high as $50, but I know that would be too high for many...
I will go $50 as well. Maybe we can rent out like a ball room or something like that from a Hotel? I know some have small rooms for meetings and stuff.

Do we have anything like a date set yet? Or even a definite 'yes' to SM-LAN 2005 being held? The reason that I ask is MillionManLAN 4 is June 24-27 '05 and registration opens tonight. I intend to be there (whenever, wherever, and however it happens) but I feel the same way. Driving nearly 400 miles roundtrip & paying the Lan costs is doable, but adding a $40 wireless NIC for what would likely be a one-time use would be stretching it.

All we need is one WAP to connected to the network, and route all net-bound traffic through that. This way we'd be on our own network, still have internet access, and the majority of us wont need to buy wireless cards.
Thanks, but I'm not interested in having it on the west side of michigan. If we were going to do that, we would just move a few more miles west and have it in Chicago, based around a few other short-media oldtimers :)
Huh... what's that ya said... me ears doesn't works as good as when I's was younger.

Yeah I hear you prime... I talked with you QCH yesterday and "Depends" is now sponsoring his BF1942 LAN team... Originally he tried to land a colostomy bag manufacturer until he realized they were just selling him a line of $h*t about the sponsorship. ;D
Also have you decided on a drop dead date as to whether we'll be able to have it in Detroit?
Thanks...
Who this Comic dude? Should we Ban him... oh yeah, that's that Dead Head that I brought along to help fend off Detroit thugs. ;D
A cut off date would be nice. I have every intention of going to the LAN but if I could tell my wife that on X date, I will know if the LAN is on or I will know the LAN details.
BTW... Depends RULE ( Part of the contract, I must Defend Depends and encourage everyone else to use them... come on, never have to leave your chair while gaming!!! Just keep enough beverages on hand... Depends can hold quite a lot of stuff... hours upon hours without a break.) ;D

The old office I used to be at is, without question, the perfect venue for a lan party. 15,000 square feet of vacant office space with cubicles, tables, chairs, active 768K DSL, and plenty of power.
It has been vacant since we moved out last year.
THEY FINALLY LEASED IT LAST WEEK

Some suggestions:
1) Find a PC gaming center like this one (http://www.detroitgamers.com/) (just an example) and see what might be arranged.
2) Contact groups/sites who have had their own Lan Parties in the area and ask them for suggestions.
3) Clean out your garage and have it at your place. :vimp:
I would be willing to help you with all three, if asked. :)

Yeah, I looked up Grand Rapids on a map  , which is why I said "just an example".
If there truly isn't anything comparable in the Detroit area, someone is missing a good business opportunity.

This time last year I was getting ready to head up to Michigan w/QCH for the SM-LAN. My expectations were high and when all was said and done, I wasn't disappointed. It was a *REAL* blast!
This year I'm looking at the calendar reflecting on what might *NOT* be... The days are starting to fill up in June, July, and August and the longer we go with *NO* appreciable drop-dead date, the chances of getting everybody to show up are greatly diminished.
I realize I'm probably opening a can-of-worms that is best left closed since the last time this idea was broached - my gut tells me so - BUT what about looking at an alternative venue if we can't get something ironed out by the end of May.
I know in the past that Prime said that the only way he would agree to host the next SM-LAN was if it was held in Michigan (Detroit?)... I'm wondering if his stance is still firm, especially since his participation is *KEY*.
I hope everyone understands that I mean no disrespect by re-hashing this subject. I just know that a lot of effort has been put forth to make this happen and it's just not working out.
If an alternate venue could somehow ease the pain and provide a way for all of us to get together, I'd be more than happy to offer up my efforts.
Respectfully submitted
Ocomik
I think we need to put a final yes/no seal as to if this will happen, or place a date where we can be certain it won't happen.

We cant place a date until there is a place to have it at yet.
I know Brian said he is looking but if someone can find a place and can put it all together I am sure we can find a balance.
I believe people are asking for a "Date of No Return". (ie. June 1, if nothing can be worked out, SM-LAN'05 is dead.)
This allows people to begin the morning process and end the rollercoaster of emotions regarding the hopefully SM-LAN.

It is sorely obvious that I cannot pull this thing together. I am hereby releasing all responsibility for this LAN to whomever wants to take up the reigns. I hope you guys can pull it together, I feel like a big fat failure :(
Hey now.... Let's not beat thy self up. It's tough to pull off a LAN, even a small one. To pull off one as great as last year... That's a gigantic undertaking. Last years was a perfect fit for what we needed and wanted. Opportunities like Dee Bee’s offered do not come often and when they do, they dry up fast.
We are all VERY hopeful for the SM-LAN'05. I looked forward to it on the way back from SM-LAN'04. I really want to see, hang out, and FRAG fellow SM'ers. The passion of this thread and ones from last summer prove that. We want a LAN and you volunteered for the chore of organizing it again. Just like your previous business ventures, not every venture is a success. The requirements like Space, 24 Hr. Access, Air conditioning, Internet access, and a cheap price... those are some serious potential roadblocks.
Let us know what you need help with. Let us know your stumbling blocks and what you expect from the LAN. What direction do you NOT want to LAN to go (not physical but organizationally). SM-LAN'05 NEEDS BRIAN and regardless if others end up organizing it, we need your blessing and, quite frankly, we need you to behind it. SM-LAN with out Brian is just a LAN.
You may have a bit of "padding" but you are not a "big fat failure".

I don't think that you can be considered a failure by any stretch of the imagination, Brian. You've done a lot of work for this, and it's definitely not your fault that the venues just didn't manage to accommodate. You're still the man!

10 May 2005, 6:53pm
Well by me stretching this out for months just to still be at square one is definitely a failure. I get frustrated with my lack of ability to make this happen.
My real fear is that if the LAN is held elsewhere, like chicago, I won't be able to go. But at this point I just don't care anymore because it's more important for the community for this to happen regardless of one man's wishes (mine, in this case). Not trying to make a sympathy bid or sound altruistic. I just want this thing to go down, and it looks like it's not gonna happen here. I hope Q and Ocomik can pull it together in Chicagoland.

If it is held in Chicago on a date I'm available, I'll probably be able to swing by Detroit to get a carload of people, and my uncle recently offered me use of his apartment in Chicago any time I want it :) Just an FYI.

Will this lan be opened to anyone here at sm ?.
The Lan is open to anyone willing (and able) to travel to where ever the LAN is held. We had friends of SM folk, we had family of SM folk, and we had guys from Icrontic also.
You're more than welcome.
Team Nexlia is already planning to host 'NexLiAN 6' down here in Cincy on the weekend of June 24th. If there is any interest, we Nexlian's could talk about moving it to a bigger venue, and inviting the SM crowd.
Right now, GH and I usually hold it in our apartment, which barely holds 8 people, so we would certainly need to move it, but there is a gamer place here in Milford that could proly hold 35-40 peeps with PCs (that's a low estimate). We've never talked to them about hosting an all-weekend type of event, so I don't know what kind of pricing it would be, but we can find out.
This is just an idea. I havn't even discussed it with the rest of Team Nexlia but, I thought I'd see what kind of interest there might be in this if we did it.

I would try to get something going here, at least as a backup plan in case we can't get it elsewhere, but there's just frickin' nothing around here. That includes S-M members. I think there's one person in Milwaukee, that I'm aware of... I just can't remember who ;D. Edcentric, maybe?
But, all in all, it doesn't make sense to do it here. I could easily make Chicago, my parents have given me the OK for anywhere within 6 or so hours of driving, and if I'm lucky, I'll be able to drive myself (and possibly McDubs, if he can/wants to go) there. Either way, I have the green light on it, and I hope we can do this somewhere. I missed last year, but this year is looking good :)
I'm thinking of Kalamazoo, MI. It's 2.5 hrs from Detroit, 2.5 hrs from Chicago, 4 hrs from Ohio, and probably 4.5 hrs from Wisconsin. I could grab people from Chicago's O'Hare airport, Prime from Detroit, and Kalamazoo has a international airport too but most flights stop in Detroit or Chicago before going to Kalamazoo.
Of course, Chicago would be the easiest for me and Ocomik and I'm sure we could find something but it may preclude people due to distance to drive.
