HL2 lagging BAAADLY... [Archive]

At first I thought this was like in Doom III where it would load textures and crap during the game, a lack of RAM, but waiting around doesn't help my situation at all. Looking at certain things, I'll get a framerate of like 1-3, but looking away my framerate is right about where it should be, upwards of 40 fps. Look at these screenshots... Any idea what's going on here?

Specs:
P4 2.8 GHz@stock
512 megs PC3200 ram
Radeon 9700 Pro@stock

Running the game @ 1024x768, 4x AA 4x AF

Try turning off the AA and AF. I have the same card, a bit slower cpu, more ram and HL2 runs fine but stutters a bit a times. I don't your card can handle the AA and AF.
