After doing that safely remove usb storage thingy in the system tray, the media card icons dissapear and when I put in a card it wont show up again. When I did the safely remove storage thing before I could just restart and get it back, but now it wont let me. I did it like 5 times. whats the problem?
and does that thing really matter? the safely remove storage thing?

Yes, the "Safely Remove" precaution usually does matter. With cards and pen drives, you are liable to damaging or removing all data from the removable device if you don't shut it down properly.
Have you tried restarting your computer followed by reinserting your card to get the icon back?

Probably the best way to fix it is to reinstall the drivers for the device. When inserted, does the card show up in Device Manager?

Well, after awhile i restarted and its back now. But when I do do that safely remove the storage thing it removes it and I would have to restart. whys that?
EDIT
I found this optimal thing under the media card hardware and I could choose from quick removal where you dont have to do it from the safely remove storage thing, and there is the opposite, where u have to do it by safely remove storage. This also goes for the lexmark flash storage device.
if i check the quick removal for all the devices that need safely remove storage thing, can i just pull it out then?

On my smart card reader I don't do the safely remove hardware thing. I just put in a smart card or MM card, do what i need to do then remove it. If i do the safely remove device thing them like you I lose all the media card drives (its 7 in 1 device). However mines an internal smart card reader that so it may different if you have an external one but I doubt it.

Yep. That's how I've been doing it.
What OS are you running and what brand/type of device is it. I take it that you are connecting via a USB port...
My Best to you,
