So I was sitting here playing HL2 in the middle of all this action. Power goes out. Comes back on in 2 seconds, so I turn the computer back on, praying I didn't get too far before the last auto save.
I fired up HL2, and thankfully the last save point was only a few minutes behind. Yay! Start loading, gets halfway, and it gives me this error:
"failed to lock index buffer in CMeshDX8::LockIndexBuffer"
and after I hit "OK" (only option) and sit at the desktop for a sec it gives me this:
"The instruction at "0x241f7c37" referenced memory at "0x010df5c0". The memory could not be "read".
Click on "OK" to terminate the program."
I tried loading a different save, same thing. Tried starting a new game, (after copying the save files) same thing. So I reinstalled the game... All five CD's of it, and again I have this error.
I don't know why it's complaining about DX8... both software AND hardware is DX9. (9700 Pro) It's also complaining about memory... Think it could've gotten messed up a bit when the power went out?
These attachments are the errors, in order of occurance.

Hm. Weird. Try going back to default clock speed, just in case it forked your memory. Also run MemTest, just in case.
Usually when I get those "referenced memory" errors they go away after I try it again. I wonder if it's putting itself in a section of RAM that went (or always has been) poof.

Also, try reinstalling directx. There are "directx uninstallers" out there but I don't have the link at the moment. When I get one I'll post.

Both of those errors are a VERY common occourance with HL2, and happen to all machines close to the end of the "loading" stage (one or two blocks from the end). It's a known bug in the game (check for yourself @ steampowered.com forums) and will require a patch to fix.
In many people's expirence (mine included), reboot the computer, and the first time you run the game you shouldn't have any crashes, at least until the next time you load up the game.

That's odd. It's never once happened to me. :-/
Then again, I never seem to be afflicted with common problems (XP, SP2, IE, etc).

*shrug* It never happened to me either, until I got into Ravenholm or later. Anyways, it's a common bug, and those who are having the problem are stuck waiting for a patch. :bawling:

I have yet to find a good solution to fixing these errors :( .
Hopefully valve will do something soon ....... but i doute it

Valve usually have a good rep getting patches out and fixing problems so just sit tight they are fixing it.

For me it always happened a block or two before halfway.
A friend of mine thought it was the memory, and suggested I switch it to another slot in my mobo (single channel mobo), and just to be safe I put my computer back to stock speeds and it seems to have worked. I loaded a few times without a problem.

Me either! :p
