View Full Version : Where did Sherman's March to the Sea end?
So asked by my brother to my father and I as we were eating.. In response, my father gave a rather quick witted response and he was heard to say.
"The sea?"

You are related to Thrax's Old Man? Why, that would mean that you were a close relative of...
Never Mind. :mullet:
Sherman's March reached its southernmost point at Savannah, Georgia. Along with Grant's encirclement of Richmond, Virginia, it sealed the doom of the Confederacy. There were plans to remove Sherman's conquering army by sea, but it was decided to have the army move Northeast through the Carolina's and from there position itself as another threat upon the Confederate Capitol. Contrary to conventional belief, the brunt of Sherman's "scorched earth" policy was concentrated on South Carolina - where secession had begun (at least overtly) with the attack on Fort Sumter.
If the question arises at another dinner engagement of the Thrax Clan, you might mention that Sherman's army ultimately stopped somewhat North of Bentonville, North Carolina. I have a warm spot in my heart for the area as it hosts one of the best Civil War re-enactments (http://www.ah.dcr.state.nc.us/sections/hs/bentonvi/bentonvi.htm) I have ever seen. Hopefully this is still true; I attended the event about ten years back and was able to take the best pictures I've ever personally captured on such an occasion. I could post a few, should anyone care to see them. :)

Ego, I've tried my best to be nice about it, but you've really got to lose that avatar. It looks like a pile of discarded testicles.
How do I know? The Profchick is a surgeon. (Thanks, Nat, for showing me...)
Yes, go NC for ultimately prolonging a war that was all but over. Savannah was the name I couldn't rembember for some reason.
Yeah, I'd actually like to see them as well.

2 men wanting to see a pile of severed and discarded testicles would be considered weird anywhere else but here.
