When connecting, it dont show that i connected

Let me explain. At the bottom right hand corner, there is 2 computers with a small x. Well now on my computer those to computers are no longer there. When I connect to the internet, It don't show that I'm connected. Therefore without that, i have to disconnect by turning off the computer. How do I fix this.

I am going to assume you are using windows XP as you havent specified your operating system

Go to your "My Network Places"
Click on "View Network Connections"
Right click on your Connection
Tick the "Show icon in notification ares when connect"
Click ok

it is ticked and its still not there. when im connected, it still sais dial. my internet works but i cant disconnect it sais dial even though im connected.
