Sharing an IP?

The ISP only gave my friend a single IP and he's trying to get two machines to connect to the net. Is it possible to get two computers sharing a cable connection through a router to use a single IP?

I'm sure you know this, but if he doesn't want to buy a router then he could use Windows Internet Connection Sharing on one machine to the other.

RWB is quite correct.

A router is easier to set up and will do the NAT for you. I'm currently running six computers off one IP at home through my Linksys router.

They already have the router; so there should be some option on the router to do this automaticaly?

//edit: Strike that. They have a switch. They were using router/hub/switch interchangably. It's a Dlink DSS-5+

Yip. As Prof said so rightly, just connect the router to the WAN (cable connection) and then plug the PC's into the switch on the router. Just connect to the web interface of the router to config anything extra ;)

Ah, I got this figured out now. Hub/switch needs two ethernet cards in one of the systems to pull this off. They both have laptops, so that isn't an option. I'll just tell him to return the switch and buy a router because I don't really want to mess with a more complicated setup since this is just a favor :)

Ahh, that makes a sense. They just bought a network switch instead of a router. Take it back and exchange it for a router, then jobs a' goodun :)

The confusing part of this thread was the first post said they HAD A ROUTER.

So the answer is Yes thats what a router is used for actually.

But from the first post it went downhill fast into Internet connection sharing through software then into a hub/switch and eventually back into router land?
