help with BPftp server

I am trying to setup my own ftp server from home, and i decided to go with BulletProof FTP Server. This is my first experience with this sort of thing, so bear with me if i ask really stupid questions. I can't seem to bring up the BPFTP FAQ so hopefully someone can point me in the right direction.

First, here's my internet setup. I am behind an smc barricade-g wireless router/firewall, and i know that i have to open up port 21 for ftp. Now i have opened up ports in the past for edonkey (TCP or UDP), but is it the same thing?

When in the web setup of my router, under 'virtual server' is where i have opened ports before. So what is the protocol type for ftp, TCP, UDP, or both?

Now on to the really stupid question. When i am telling someone to login to my ftp server what address do i give them, my ip? Or is it something different since i am behind a router.

I have everything else figured out, so if i can figure out these 2 problems, i should be good to go. Thanks!

Your biggest problem is that FTP goes to other ports when it starts transferring stuff. Otherwise TCP 21 is sufficient and your clients will use ftp:// [your WAN IP] (the router doesn't change anything in that regard).

If you need immediate functionality, put the computer in the DMZ. I don't know exactly which [range of] ports FTP will need for the transfers...

Okay, I looked it up, check out http://slacksite.com/other/ftp.html for a good explanation. Hopefully what you can do is:
Set BPFTP's passive-mode listening ports
Forwand this range of ports in the router to the server.

Thanks for the link EMT, i read it and theoretically understand what i need to do, but i still am not sure of exactly what i need to put in my router's config...i think a range or ports > 1024 or something?

Try to find settings in BPFTP for the port range to use on a passive connection. It doesn't look like you're able to specify a range at the router so you'll have to make multiple entries covering the program's range as much as possible.

The BP FAQ is offline, so i can't find out what i need to do from there...

Can anyone tell me what EXACTLY i need to put in my router's config??? I am confused... :scratch:

I can take a look at BPFTP in a couple of days and look around for the setting. Once you know the ports it wants to use, all you have to do is forward that range on the router. So I think what you'd do on that first pic is make an entry in a row with your computer's LAN IP, select TCP, copy the port range into both the LAN and Public fields (that's my guess, anyway), check Enable, and press Add.

I finally got access to the online FAQ for BPFTP, and i finally understand what needs to be done! :) So i think that i have it setup correctly.....take a look. The first one is from my router's config, and the second is BPFTP options. Everything look ok? My client can't log on yet....but that might be on his end, i just want to make sure eveything is ok on my end.
