This will be a long long introduction, but at least everyone will know what's been done and some of my problems. I have a Pentium IV Dell computer w/Windows XP Home Edition and I have a broadband connection. When I started all this I was using IE 6.0 and Norton AntiVirus, but I was constantly being harrassed with popups, spyware, ect., ect. My main problem at the time was Search200 that would reassign itself as my Home page and wouldn't leave. I came to your forums looking for help and discovered your Deafeat Spyware: Full Review document by primesuspect. Printing it out, I looked it over and discovered that I had exactly 52 programs running in my background, which according to the document is waaaay too many and something is wrong. Thus began my quest to clean my computer of everything bad and not just my original Search200 problem.
Since that time I've uninstalled IE 6.0 and downloaded the free version of Opera, downloaded the free versions of AdAware, Spybot Pro, SpySubract, and CWShredder along with still having Norton. Following the document, I deleted all cookies and temporary Internet files, went into Safe mode and deleted all BWHO and anything that said Search in the title of my start up processes using HijackThis. By the time I was done I was down to 40 processes running in the background. I was happy.
After sitting around for 4 hours watching every imaginable program clean my computer (i.e. AdAware, Norton, Spybot, SpySubtract, CWShredder), I reset it only to discover that I was now back up to 52 processes and now have Casino and Poker icons on my desktop just like before. I have no clue how any of this stuff is getting through or why I can't get rid of it. Opera doesn't give a whole lot of flexibility or ease of use when it comes to Cookie settings either. It's basically turn them all on, turn them all off, or prompt me 50 million times for every website I go to for approval as if I knew what cookie allows me to view the site versus what cookie is putting spyware on my system. If I turn them all off then so much for trying to browse including my Hotmail which won't work without cookies.
Here's a listing of my HJT log. Please, please, could someone tell me what I'm doing wrong???? I'm looking for more than just "delete this line and everything will be fine" advice, but I'd also like to know "the line you just deleted was caused by XXX and it's getting into your computer by doing XXX so to keep it from coming back do XXX or don't do XXX". Thank you very much to all the volunteers who are smart enough to figure all this stuff out and help me.
