<a href="http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=11150" target=_blank>The Inq: Pricing for Athlon 64 leaks</a>

WHEN AMD introduces its 3200+ (2GHz) Athlon 64 on the 23rd September, it will charge around $399 for the single channel DDR 754 pin model. In October, it will introduce a 3400+ version of the chip.

And its Athlon 64 FX, which is a 940 pin dual channel DDR chip, is expected to cost over $650, but will not use AMD's "PR" rating.

Meanwhile, the Athlon 64 FX with 939 pins will now launch at the end of the first quarter of next year, and we understand it won't now be compatible with the 940 pin version, meaning a motherboard change.

This chip is currently codenamed San Diego, and had been expected to be released in Q1 of next year.

Athlon 64 3200+ (2.0ghz) 754pin $399
Athlon 64 FX 2.00ghz 940pin $650

Normally an upgrade cycle this long would bother me, but I think waiting until Q3 of '04 is for me. And you know? My wallet loves me for it.

Must be...Patient...So .. Very patient.

I'm finishing rebuilding my Primary PC, and then I think I'm going to have to wait until Q4 2004 also... the PAIN!

Can't wait to see what incarnation of the A64 will be the next Barton 2500... ;)

The Sole reason I still run Dual 1ghz P3's as my main comp today.

Funny thing, I think I actually paid around $399 for 1 of my processors almost 3 years ago, I can't remember but that seems about right.

I haven't made a major proc & mobo upgrade in 3 years, since I never really felt a need to. I'll wait until it's the perfect time to get me a new comp-- when the price is right, chipsets prove themselves, and everything else.

For ~$350 you could upgrade to a Dual Barton 2.0ghz (after modifing 2 Barton 2500+ - very easy to do)...

MSI KD7-L $160 (off of Ebay)
Barton 2500+ (2) $190 (Newegg.com)

Just a thought.... :)

The prices are right, and the chipset is proven.

Just a thought.... :)
