Seems Firefox is losing it's popup and spyware free advantage over IE. Here's the latest I've been getting and there are others. They are not being blocked by the built in popup blocker either... so what's up with that?!! I wonder if the creators of these things ever get sick of them on their own home pc's?

Anybody else getting this one?

 :shakehead  :werr: :mad2:

There aren't enough angry smilies in the world to accurately represent my feelings for this garbage and those who propogate it.

Yeah... I update and run Adaware, Spybot, occasionally Hijackthis and my AV on a VERY regular basis.

Companies have started engineering popup techniques that don't function as the traditional popup style.. Java, PHP and CFM are all getting down and funkay with the popups, and it's throwing browsers through a loop.

Maybe it's to switch to Opera or Avant.

I didn't pay attention to what site I hit when it popped up.

A recent issue of a popular pc magazine published some code that gets round most pop up detection. Safe bet lots of advertisers are now hammering it for all its worth.

I still get popups as well.

I wish there were ways to eliminate them better.

I get popups with firefox, but that's because I've got the popup blocker disabled. Stupid? Yes. Do I have a damn good reason for it? Yes.

MY IDIOT SCHOOL HAS VIRUS PROTECTION THAT INTERCEPTS DOWNLOADS ON THE NETWORK TO PROTECT THE COMPUTER ILLITERATE MORONS FROM THEMSELVES AND IT ONLY WORKS IF I DISABLE ANY POPUP BLOCKING SOFTWARE.
:rant::banghead::shakehead:mad::rarr: (can you tell this pisses me off?)

I've tried adding the network IP to my list of trusted sites, didn't help.

I have disabled pop-up stopping in both Firefox and IE, and I use a 3rd party pop-up stopper (Panicware Pop-Up Stopper.) It still does a better job of stopping pop-ups, because it is not subject to the same code work-arounds that the browser is susceptible too. In fact, in FF, my Panicware Pop-Up Stopper works so well, I have to temporarily disable it in order open up the downloads manager window after a download (unless I do the Ctrl-J thing.) It considers even that a pop-up if it is launched from a link within the browser. If it is launched by a menu command or shortcut key (Ctrl-J) then it is ok, but if I click on the little notification that tells me my download is complete, the pop-up stopper will block the new window from opening.

I think 3rd party stoppers are still better than browser integrated ones, and my Panicware stopper does a fantastic job. Plus I like having the quick enable/disable function of the system tray icon...doubleclick, and it enables or disables stopping.

I use both the integrated IE popup stopper along with Panicware running in system tray, seems that the two of them kill just about everything that comes my way, I haven't seen a popup in a long long time.

And isn't that just the way it should be....? Nice, peaceful, non-obtrusive browsing..... :)

is there such a thing anymore?

Yes, indeed. Run with:

1. Mozilla Firefox, or, as it now seems, latest IE with ALL updates.
2. Spybot, update frequently
3. AdAware, update frequently
4. Spywareblaster, update frequently
5. Spambayes email spam filter

Edit: Oops, forget to list antivirus program, updated religiously

Now here's a good one!! A popup for Vonage broadband phone service. This is from Earthlink... my cable internet service provider! Why are they advertising with popups? Their Total Access software comes with a popup blocker because everyone hates popups... yet, here they using popups to hawk their products. What a pack of hypocrites!!!! Earthlink will be hearing from me. That's ridiculous. :shakehead

You do realize you are just helping them out giving them free advertising by posting their ads here...?

it's a ploy, he works for vonage, call in the dogs

but on a less serious note..... I was also wondering why you attached a popup ad to all of your posts, stop givin the bastards more free advertising that my popup stopper wont kill!

It was just to show what was getting through in Firefox. Sheesh! That's what this thread was about, not free, good advertising for them. Mozilla was supposed to be much better than IE for that. I hate popups and refuse to buy from or click on them and figure that's how most people who frequent this forum feel too. And my point this time was, it's my ISP of all people that put this one out. Why would an ISP advertise with popups when they know people hate them and they are the scourge of the service they themselves are offering?

So... no, I do not consider posting them in this forum (Security forums), in this context, helping them out in any way. And also, in this context, it's an attachment used to illustrate a point and not a popup.

I'm cool.

Drudgereport for one. I'm bad about not paying attention to the exact site they popped up on, and it's getting to be a daily occurance. All the ones I posted are ones that slipped through Firefox's built in popup stopper which is what I depend on now. I'm thinkin about going back to Panicware.
