According to a story posted at The Inquirer, Sony's Playstation 3 processor will run at a speed of 4.6 GHz at 1.3 volts. The information is derived from a presentation intended to be shown at the ISSCC 2005 conference, which will take place from February 6 in San Francisco.

geez, how long is that pipeline? you'd need a really long one to get anywhere near that fast, and that's very much against the usual thinking of IBM, then again, the CELL processor is a complete departure from their other designs.

scratch that... only parts of it are running at 4.6ghz (specifically the vector unit), the actual CPU is just a controller. (if you know a reasonable amount about processor design read http://www.blachford.info/computer/Cells/Cell0.html)

Well sony did it, and they did it well. They took the one thing that everyone at least sort of understands and that is Ghz. Well as much as most know the higher the better, and 4.6 seems pretty high, so it must be good right? Seems like more of a good way to advertise then anything.

sony did nothing, IBM did this chip. yes, 4.6 ghz sounds good, especially when the CPI of the parts that are running at 4.6ghz is extremely low. THis is one hell of a architecture and implementation (if you dont know what i'm talking about, take a class in computer architecture or Processor design)
