Server not found

Over the last couple of days (and today especially) I've been getting a huge amount of "can not open Page" files.
Usually after refreshing it will open but not always.

There's also been a noticible slow down on the net overall.

At first I chalked it up to the blaster worm and the sobig virus that's propigating on the net, loading down servers, but now I'm not sure.

I've scanned my systems for both and they come up clean.

I did a system restore on one pc, and rolled it back to before the latest (2 days ago) update, in case that update was the culprit, but that really didn't help much.

My network runs through a new Linksys 8 port router.

Any tips or suggestions are welcome.

Is it a DNS problem? Next time you get a page not found, open up a command prompt and type "ping xxx.xxxx.com" or whatever you just got the page not found, and see if it simply says "no route to host" or "host not found" or if it gives you an IP address and then times out. We can go from there.

If your running an NT based system (NT4, 2000 or XP) try going to a command prompt and typing the following command

ipconfig /flushdns

Then try accessing the site again. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt. I am not sure if the above works on 9x based systems.

It seems to have helped somewhat, but I'm still getting "server not found" here and there.

Think it may be my ISP?

I'm also getting these messages when I try to check for updates on AVG.
Sometimes opening a browser helps and sometimes it doesn't.

I noticed from the pic that you posted in the Folding Forum the other day that you have multiple machines on your network.

Do these machines have a problem accessing the same websites? If they dont work as well then I would say give it a little time and see if it works itself out. If they work and this one doesnt then I would say you have a machine problem that we will need to look into further.

Pretty much the same on all machines.

I've noticed the AVG update problem over the last week.
The dns errors just started yesterday.

I would give it a day or so. Your ISP may be throwing a hissy fit. From what I see on the news and on the web the US is only just getting back to normal due to the blackouts you suffered last week. If you are still having the same problem say Monday'ish then I suggest looking into it further.

Oh and by the way, I have the same problem pinging www.newegg.com from my machine over in the UK.

I think the net is taking a major hit from sobig.

Good to know I'm not the only one having some problems.

My DSL provider has always been pretty reliable, with good load times. So it's good to know it's probably not them or my machines/router/modem...

Cox immediately upgraded everyones cable modems on their net to filter port 135 for this blaster worm, and upgraded them to DOCSIS 1.1 in the process, which kept the problem at bay.

In the process, it killed my detectable upload speed by speed testers. I was getting 112Kbps for my upload, but now its around 76-92Kbps.

then if its fubared,

tracert www.google.com

There are two current issues that are affecting many of you today and Adelphia would like to bring them to your attention. We encourage you to take action to protect your computer.

1. MSBlast.exe Virus Information:

As you may have heard, a significant virus known as MSBlast.exe (also known as the LovSan Web Worm) spread across the Internet over the past week. Unfortunately, many of you were affected. Those of you who have not taken action to protect your computer from this virus are still open to attack.

According to some reports, the MSBlast.exe virus may resume its attack on Saturday August 16th, 2003. The virus is programmed to launch a distributed denial-of-service attack on windowsupdate.com. This may severely impact access to the Microsoft website used to distribute security fixes against viruses. Each computer that begins to run the worm on or after 8/16/2003 (either from new infection or after a computer restart) will engage an attack on windowsupdate.com. Customers who have already downloaded the update from Microsoft should not be affected because this is the same worm attack from August 12th - the worm is just time released in this case.

If you have not downloaded the update from Microsoft, you will not be able to go to windowsupdate.com if the worm resumes its attack on 8/16/2003. To stop the virus from infecting your computer, we recommend that you take immediate action to update the security patch located at:

Customers who run firewalls are encouraged to block access to TCP port 69, 135, 4444 at the firewall level.

Ok is this still a problem cos I'm getting it constantly when I try to access sm & sm forums. Both home PC's on my lan cant reach here but my lappy once remotley connected to work through my lan can connect no problem.

My home pcs could access the sm when typying in the direct address. i.e. http://124423.... whatever it is...../forums. Unfortunately I cleared my cache of temp files so now I dont know what the address is so could some one tell me please.

Sorry, I wasn't thinking stright, that last comment wouldn't have any effect if you are using IP addresses rather than DNS names.

Are you using a router? If so try restarting it.

Also just trying Pinging SM.

Then try a Trace Route (go to the command promt and type "tracert") and post the output here. Trace the IP if the DNS name doesn't work.

So yeah, you are going to have to wait till some of those servers sort themselves out....... but an interesting idea could be to try ticking the "Black hole discovery" box on some MTU changing programs, as it sounds like the situation it was designed for.....
