Just installed a new Maxtor 250gb ata133 on SATA mobo (NF7) and boy does this thing heat up! Is this normal? I set up a fan on it for now but I've never noticed any of my older HD's heat up like this; they did get warm though

(See post #54)
Anyways, yeah the newer drives do run pretty hot.... but how hot are we talking here?

yeah well residency sucks so I sometimes lurk around the board when I have time
Well the drive is warm, not burning hot, just seemed concerning as heat and comps don't mix. But with the fan on it, seems fine.
I guess normal for new big drives?

probably... I mean, 15KRPM U320 scsi drives get so hot that you will burn your finger if you touch it.... So if it's not burning hot, I would say it's normal.

When you say "hot", I presume that you mean comparitive to-the-touch temperature difference between this new drive and other drives you've owned before?
I believe you. I guess I haven't kept up with new drive characteristics. I've got four 80GB/7200s and one 200GB drive, all IDE. All run warm under load.

Geeky sent me a file called dtemp or HDtemp (not sure of the correct name) that keeps track of the temperature of the HD's. I know its not what you asked for, but it should give you a relatively accurate reading of your temperatures and give people who know what the hell they're talking about around here a better idea of exactly how hot you're talking. :)
