I'm posting this because my wife got stung with this scam.
Bell is advising its customers to be aware of a long-distance telephone scam offering trips to various destinations.
The calls are generated from Florida under the area code (305). The caller is advised, by a voice recording message, they either have won a trip or offers a travel promotion at a reduced rate (usually Florida). The caller is then asked to dial a number (usually “9"). Dialling the number generates the “hacking”, which allows the hacker to make long-distance calls from your telephone line and possible charges to your bill. It is important to note that Bell cannot be held responsible for any incurred charges by the user and accounts will not be credited.
Should you receive such a call at the office:
- HANG UP IMMEDIATELY
- DO NOT DIAL any number(s) requested by the recorded message
- TAKE NOTE of the telephone number, if possible
- ADVISE your regional telecommunications officer
