I just oredered a brand spankin new Dell UltraSharp 2005FPW 20.1-inch Wide Aspect Flat Panel LCD Monitor (http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/ProductDetail.aspx?TabPage=productview&sku=320-4111&c=us&l=en&cs=19&page=external) And I am so stoked!
I cant wait to bust out the HalfLife2, Far Cry, and C&C Generals on that bad boy. With a 12 MS response time, they should look gorgeous!
I found some online coupon codes and got the price knocked down from 749$ to around 520$.
Just had to vent my excitment. Ill let you know how it performs.

The ones I used were 1 time use only...
But if you go to http://www.xpbargains.com/dell_coupons/ you can get a 25% off, and pay with a dell account for another percentage off.
Also watch http://www.slickdeals.net and http://www.gotapex.com for daily Dell Deals a plenty.
It seems Dell will approve anyone for financing, hell they approved me ;D .

I've never had an LCD monitor so I'm wondering is it normal for monitors to have "dead or stuck" pixels, I've heard that most monitors will have a few and that manufacturers won't take them back because it's like a standard thing that happens and if it's less than like 4 or 5 then they wont take it back?
Just wondering cause that's a sweet monitor but damn it would totally piss me off to drop that kinda coin on something and have a constant irritation of a couple of pixels that were dead.

Cam, that's true - most manufacturers will specify a certain number of allowable dead pixels.
With that said, in my experience, any major flatpanel manufacturer has been flawless. I've setup several dozen for customers as well as my own, and the only dead pixel I've ever seen was on some cheap ass rosewill 15" $150 special from the ghettocomp store. And it was like, one dead pixel.... So in short, don't let it concern you too much. Flat panels are totally sweet, and I can't go back to CRTs.

that's good to know. I love my dually 19" Samsung SyncMasters, but damn, that widescreen dell monitor is nasty. I have yet to own an LCD, pretty soon it will be time for me to dive into that arena.
I want a larger desktop to work with for video editing and photoshop and webdesign stuff that I do but I could never get used to the whole "dual monitor" thing because it doesn't flow for me, like working between two monitors dragging stuff back and forth or working with two different programs on seperate monitors, I'd rather just have a single, larger environment on one monitor.

There aren't many reviews for it yet, I did manage to find this one (http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=246836&st=0) at neowin though.
Resolution goes up to 1680x1050 wich should be plenty....
I am a little worried about one thing, it looks like a lot of people seem to be complaining about the backlight being to bright as described in this thread (http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=dim_monitor&message.id=39104&query.id=64924#M39104) on dells forum.
Oh well if that happens, ill keep making them send replacements till they get it right. :D I enjoy heckeling those poor Dell support reps anyway.
Got mine today !!!!! DAMN this screen is WIIIIIIIDDDDDEEEE!!!!!.
I had just enough time before class to attach the base to the monitor (drooling), can't get home from class fast enough tonight!
SlickDeals.net (http://slickdeals.net/) has the offer back up (as of 7:30 pm Mountain Time, 21 Feb 05)

Quick review:
NO DEAD PIXELS!
Screen is amazingly crisp, I usually run 1152 x 864 on most screens I use. This monitor can handle that resoultion in spades! I have a BFG 6800 Ultra OC, so I used the supplied DVI cable to connect from the monitor to video card. Dell includes a VGA cable and a USB cable to connect the 2 USB ports on the side of the monitor to your machine.
GAMING:
Ran through a couple levels of DOOM 3 last night. At first everything appears a little "stretched" but not so bad that things are distorted. Need to play with the brightness set up though, getting some very deep shadows.
Monitor handled DOOM 3 through my 6800 easily. Detected no ghosting at all, even when something bad jumped out at me, and I had to spin to take it out. Detail in game is just as crisp & clean as you would expect from a monitor like this.
more soon....

Ok I got r all hooked up... My first thought was its really bright! Its friggin blinding me ;D
Mine has 1 dead pixel in the middle of the left hand suide of the screen, so Ill have to send it back.
I played some HL2 on it, and noticed it's not quite as jfast as my old CRT... but after 5 minutes of gameplay I could no longer tell.
The picture is the most crisp and vibrant I have seen from a monitor, in fact I may have to turn the brightness down, cause I am burning my retinas out.
The picture quality more than makes up for the response time difference between this, and my old CRT.
Dispite the dead pixel this thing is definately a keeper!
Check out the pics...

Found another problem with mine. When the screen is black, light from the backlight seeps through on the top right corner making it look grayish.
As I can see on the Dell forums, this is a common issue. I am going to have them replace it anyways though. I am already very attached to this monitor though, it will be hard to live without during the time I have to ship it back and recieve the replacement.
You cant see the backlight bleeding or the dead pixel while gaming though, so its not that big of a deal.

Hmm I will have to check mine out when I get home. Do you mean when the screen is off? Don't think I noticed it on mine.

24 Feb 2005, 10:03pm
No not when the screen is off, but like when the screen is supposed to be black... like when the default winXP screensaver runs, or when a game is loading.

does HL2 support the widescreen resolutions this thing is capable of, or will it stretch?
does HL2 support the widescreen resolutions this thing is capable of, or will it stretch?
At first it appears a little streched, but I think it is just because I was so used to the 4:3 format of my old 21" Sony E500.
Now that I've played a few days on the Dell, it appears more natural.
Yeah, half life 2 supports it. Change it to aspect ratio 16:10(i have no clue why) and the resolution is listed. I just got mine in today, no dead pixels and no bleed thru. Good god this thins is amazin.

And does HL2 not look georgeous on these bad boys? Far Cry is pretty sweet, with the bright tropical settings. Cant wait for battlefield 2 to get released... that will be sweet!
I cant beleive I am the only one with dead pixels, and bleed through. Just bad luck I guess.
I have not called dell for a replacement. I hope they do not argue with me.
I'll get pics up today(during lunchy munchy), but gottdamn this thing is pretty. Its my first brand new monitor I've ever had....I've been dealing with freebies and handmedowns my whole life. I've finally gradua-ma-tated.
Feels good doesn't it McBain. I love my new monitor. Everything is so crisp, and big now :) And I saved a crap load of room on my desk as well.
I feel like a porn-star....once you go big you don't go back.

Agree w/ both of you
I don't know what to do with all the extra desk space I have now! I went from a 21" Trinitron E500, sucker weighed in at 70 lbs! It was a monster.
I can't help but crack a ear to ear grin everytime I walk in my den/computer room. My lady thinks I'm losing it, she laughs at my "dumb-content-guy-look" whenever I stare at my new toy!
I just tell her, "Its the same way I look at you darling!" ;D (aint as dumb as I look!)
