RAID 0 ATA assistence

Maby you can suggest a better option. I am going to build a modded box (conversation piece) for a local Doctors Office.

Beacuse it will hold all patient data and vital info they want Raid 0 mirroring.

Due to most new Raid boards have SATA raid and not the real SATA benifit IE 150 VS 133 Mbps I am opting for ATA 133 raid system. Cheaper basically ;)

I am looking at the Epox EP-8KRA2+ (http://secure.newegg.com/app/specification.asp?item=13-123-202)

Is there a better board that will support a 333 FSB and ATA RAID?

I am open to any suggestions. If we were talking 266FSB I would go with the KT333 SOYO Dragon Ultra Platnum:D I love mine :respect:

Whoa.. This is the first problem that I see:

RAID 0 IS NOT REDUNDANT - Raid 0 is not mirrored - it is striped. It's high performance, but no data backup whatsoever. In fact, it's doubly dangerous because if one of two drives fails, all data is lost.

You want RAID 1 if you're only using two drives. RAID 1 is a slow performer - figure drive speed minus a tad bit for RAID overhead. If you want a very fast, but redundant array, you need RAID10, which requires at LEAST four drives. Two striped drives, mirrored onto the other two.

Yes you are correct I meant RAID 1 mirroring not RAID 0 stripping.:banghead:

There are some hit and miss things going on with the KT600 platform from what's been written by a few who are trying them out.

If you are after an standard ATA133 setup, then getting a slightly older but revised, stable as a rock board is no problem :) Just grab a $30 Highpoint 372 card. Id actually recommend this because this is a biz rig, not a gaming, tweaking setup.

Im using the ABIT nForce2 NF7-S, which only has SATA but a PCI highpoint card gives me as good performance as onboard. There was an article (which I can't find damnit) published eons ago, that noted the differences between onboard & PCI. They were a mute point because they were so close :)

Buy for the needs for the job :thumbsup: which I feel in this case is go with what you know and trust + a $30/$40 PCI highpoint 372 or 374 :)

I had not even considered a daughter card. Maby I will look into this. I guess it was just one of those "if you can get it onboard why pay extra" issues.:D Kinda like buying a USB 2.0 card :o

Kinda reminds me of the days when the IDE controller was a daughter card. That going onboard was a big improvement :)

For RAID-1 I would just do software RAID through Win2K or if you'r using XP (don't know why you would use that for buisness). There is just one real pitfall to the RAID-1 approach though and it is a big one. Anything that you put on one will go on the other automaticly (good thing) but anything else like a virus, worm or anything else not wanted will go on it also (bad thing). I would highly recomend a good backup utility that could be set to automaticly backup the changes at the end of the day when the system is shut down. Just my $.02.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Serillel2 adapters should also do the trick right? They allow PATA drives (standard ATA) to run on a SATA controller. You could say get a board like the NF7-S v2.0, or any other relatively modern board (with SATA), and just pick up some Serillel2 adapters, I think at least one should be included with most SATA boards anyway, so you may just have to buy one, though I'm not sure. Just a thought.

Wouldn't another advantage of the PCI RAID daughter card be easy portability to a new motherboard? I know when I switched motherboards the RAID controller changed from Highpoint to Promise and I had to rebuild my array. Luckily, I had everything backed up prior. The daughter card should eliminate that problem, especially if you keep your OS, applications, and data on different partitions.
