I have been offered a chance to go to a 6 month course to get a qualification as an Emergency Medical Technician to be payed for by someone else. I don't know what or if their is an age limit. This training is so I can become the medic in my Civil Air Patrol Squadron's Urban Direction Finding team.

I really want to take it and get qualified, so what I need to know is what the age limit is for a class like this.

Leo says it should be my summer job. ;D

How old are you? If you haven't graduated HS yet, I owuld probably wait maybe, depends on your plans for your future.

What is the minimum age limit on becoming an EMT?

You must be at least eighteen years of age to be a New York State EMT-Basic. You may become eighteen during the same month the state test is scheduled.
I know you're up in Alaska; sorry, but I couldn't find any specific info for your state.

I would imagine that eighteen would be a minimum, though. It would seem to me that there would be too much liability involved to allow a minor to perform a job like that.

You mentioned in your music recording thread that you would be graduating soon. Unless you're one of those child prodigies (which wouldn't surprise me, knowing what I do about your old man :D ) you might be close enough that you'd qualify by the time you finish the six-month course.

One other thing to check is how soon after the completion of the course you need to sit for the test. If it's going to take longer than six months for you to turn eighteen but you can take the test whenever you choose, you might as well go for it. (Assuming you feel confident that you could still pass the test well after taking the course.)

This is a wonderful field (if you have the stomach for it - I certainly don't...) and is the type of job that rewards those who do it with much more than just a paycheck. My Significant Other is a Surgeon. Many times she has made the comment that the only reason the patient had any chance at all was due to the fine work the EMT's did in getting him to the hospital alive.

I wish you luck. :)

I am currently 16 years old and a sophomore in HS. I really want to get that qualification. The thing I am wondering is that maybe you can be under 18 to take the class but you have to be 18+ to become an EMT. I am trying to get more details on it.

You can be CPR certified and Life Guarding certified once you enter high school. They actually offer the class with license testing at my school here.

No, my girlfriend Natalie is a surgeon. If she finds out I've got something going on the side I am in big trouble - she knows how to use a knife and where my vital parts are located.

Isn't she the one who provided the severed vitals for a short stint as Entropy's avatar?
