View Full Version : PCI 66mhz Card in a 33mhz Port
i was wondering about a backward compatable raid card. I know it will run in a 33mhz PCI port but hat kind of "lack" would i encounter? would it still let me use the 8 sata ports?

also if u build an array with that( say like 4 drives ), and want to add more drives, can i just plug new ones in and they be automaticly added to the array?

Many 64bit PCI cards are backwards compatable (but some are not) so you may want to look into it a bit. The biggest bottle neck you will face is the ~130MB/s limitation of the 32-bit PCI bus. So if you are looking to put together a big Raid-0, you'll top out once you put in 2-3 drives in the array.
For the most part (unless you have a higher end controller), the arrays can't be dynamically expanded. I believe you'd have to destroy and rebuild the array when adding more drives with a controller like the one you posted above.
What type of array are you looking to setup?
well this machine is really starting to piss me off so im in the 1st stages of pricing a new one, its still going to be a gaming machine so it wont have any PCI-X slots, but i want alot of space, with disaster recovers ( because i am me, lol ). the largest port raid 5 card for regulat pci i could find was a highpoint 4 port sata card

a friend told me that it would be more bennificial to use a card with more slots so when/if i fill the array i have room for expansion. and im sure taht card wont dynamicly expand the array, i was thinkin about having 4 300gb drives in raid 5, but like i said its still in the "hey lok im pissed ill just build a new computer" phase nothign is definite
but his isnt just 64bit. It's pci-x. Many pci-x cards only work in a pci-x slot. This isnt like comparing a 64bit/66mhz card as they are almost all backwards compatible.
I would email HPT or go download a manual and not be guessing since you don't have a pci-x slot.
Most guys that run a gaming box do it for speed and raid-5 is horrid for that unless you get a higher end controller.
Tex
it would be a mixture of server/gaming rig, the raid 5 is only for starage, i plan on having different drives apart from the raid 5 for actual gamming
