View Full Version : Dumb question: Removing a p4 socket 478 fan

My problem is my fan on my cpu sounds like a helicopter, so i bought a new fan but for the life of me i cant figure out how to get the old one off. I flip up the plastic levers and unplug it, now shouldnt it just pull off? when i do try, it feels like i really have to pull and its not budging and it might break, what am i doing wrong? :scratch:

the P4's use a small plastic tooth like thing on all four courners of the fan assembly u have to CAREFULLY pry each corner off ( u gotta pull them like out sideways away from the cpu ), u should do it 1 side at a time, so u dont break it, if u break it you are screwed.

edit, lemme find a picture before u start, u can really bone urself by breaking it

I hate to ask this question, makes me feel like an idiot but this fan would work for me right? Im Running a northwood p4 3.0ghz on a asus p4p8x. http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=35-106-606&depa=0

EDIT: oh yah, i dont overclock, i just wanted a cheap fan that is not so loud

yes indeedy, when u pry 1 side off ull see how it works

and yes that new heatsink/fan will work

Hell I never got used to that damned clamp!!! It's a pain in the ass.... then I went back to AMD ;D

Never broke anything though, except a motherboard I scratched when I lost my patience while using a philipshead screwdriver to pry the damned thing off.

Personally, i found a flat screwdriver fits behind the plastic arms quite easy and acts as a lever. Comes away easy as. :)

Yes.............i have broken a few too trying the hard way. :rolleyes:
