View Full Version : I can't open Windows Explorer

I mean, AT ALL. I try to open My Documents, and I get an message saying 'Explorer has experienced an error in *.dll. Explorer will now close.
If you experience this again, please try restarting your computer.' (Where * has been SHELL32.DLL, KERNEL32.DLL, DDHELP.DLL, SHLWAPI.DLL, MSHTML.DLL, SHDOCVW.DLL, <unkown> and others. Also, it was once KRNL386.EXE)

I've run through Scan Disc, done a defrag, done a full system scan with Norton (and then restarted the comp and booted it from the Norton CD), I've ran through a full scan with Ad-Aware SE, and while I think the comp is now clean and pretty darn tidy, I can't for the life of me open any folder from Explorer. My Computer, C drive (ANY drive), My Docs, My Pics, nothing.

I managed to do a HJT log without opening C drive (thank you Run...) and I've pasted it here.

if possible go to start> run msconfig disable all startup items plz.

try run with sysclean.com from

http://www.trendmicro.com/ftp/products/tsc/sysclean.com
extract the vpn* virus pattern file in same folder.

http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp [Unzip lattest pattern file to *.vpn extension plz b4 run sysclean.com in same folder.]

after your done at that point you can enable your startup items again and post again here.

By disable all start up items, do you mean to uncheck everything in the 'Startup' tab, or to choose 'selective startup' in 'General', and uncheck everything?

Well if your allready able to run a scan just do so and see if any items are resistent to removal.

Its not a nessairy action.


ps. its the uncheck option btw. and just normal start.

but again if you can scan allready just continue.

I don't think anything was resistant to removal. It took nearly two hours to complete, and in the end, the log was so long, that it could only show me the end part.

If im right the syclean left a logfile on ur pc in ur map were you start ur sysclean.com from, could you copy and paste it here people will know what they are dealing with then.

You can re-install Explorer.exe from your Windows ME installation CD. Follow the instructions here:

I searched (as well as I could, considering I can't open a window to do a search), and I can't find it. I don't know if it just didn't save, or if it has, and is simply hiding from me. But seeing as it didn't report anything was wrong, and it took two hours to complete, I don't really want to do it again.

As for reinstalling Explorer.exe, that could be a bit difficult as Compaq didn't give us our discs. We've sent (another) request through asking that they be sent, but I'd like to try and fix it without having to resort to that. If it does come down to that though, then of course I'll do it. Having to access everything through Word/Excel or 'Open Office Document' in Start is getting old. I'd like to rearrange my folders/files THROUGH my folders.

Is there anything else that I can try? I'll stand on my head singing Kumbaya if it'll help.

Alright, I don't know how it happened, but after running another defrag and then RegistryFix afterwards (and removing 8 threats), WinExplorer is now working again.

My boss was tinkering with RegFix this morning when I got to work, and when she was finished, she said 'Is it working now?' and tried it. And it's working. *is elated*

So, thank you all for your help. I know that if I hadn't done the scans you suggest here, we wouldn't have got this far so quickly. Of course, she is now taking all the credit, because all I did was 'look on the internet all the time', but I really couldn't care less. I know that it was what I found in the internet that helped as much as her 'knowing' what to do.

So thank you all again, so very much. As far as I can see, this is now resolved. :)
