All right here comes the full story

In December 1999, uhh that is a long time ago, I bought the components for a new computer.

The PSU in question is a standard Aopen 300W

I have had trouble powering up my rig back then and I still have problems.

I have changed just about everything since then, only the PSU remains.

I have found out that if I prior to starting the rig short the green wire and a black wire in the atx connector a couple of times.
It short it until it powers up, it does not power up the first couple of time.
That is why the rig will not boot either.

After this treatment it boots fine when I reconnect the atx connector to the motherboard.

Is this a problem with the connector or could it be a problem with the PSU itself?

I dont really know much about PSU's at all but isnt shorting those wires a way of bypassing some safety feature? What feature if any i dont know perhaps someone can correct me/enhance this?

the ps is bad- the green wire is the pwr_on lead. time for a new ps.

No I do not think so.

It is the same as pressing the power button, except that you bypass the motherboard.

It is the method used to see whether or not the PSU is faulty.

LOL geeky1 my thoughts exactly.

The only thing bothering me is that it has been bad from the beginning.

I am short of connectors from the psu as well.
My Radeon 9700 is daisychaining with a fan and two harddrives (Not optimal)

No the switch has not been replaced

But earlier I had to pull the cable of the motherboard and then refit it, after this it might boot.

Or I could test the PSU with a bent paperclip usually it powered up right away, but that seems to have worsened now.

The PSU is mounted in a Aopen HQ08 so it is all ATX no old switches here.

I will buy a new PSU soon I just don't have the money right now.
I am looking at the Antec Truepower 430W.
That looks rather nice considering the price.
It has more connectors too.

BTW: I am impressed that the PSU will keep my rig running at all

Wow, that seems like a lot of stuff, i'd say to just get a new PS. I personally recommend Antec.

that's a hell of a lot of stuff to ask any 300w to power... I'd recommend an Antec as well, or a PC Power & Cooling... U could try an Enermax, but I've heard they don't do well on AMD systems sometimes, or one of the many PSs that use Leadman stuff- a Raidmax/Robanton/Powmax 400 or 500w would probably be fine (and cheap)...

Yeah as I said I am impressed with it so far.
I wasn't sure at all that it would power my system.
But when will I have a PSU meltdown?

I am looking at the Antec TruePower 430W that looks nice, but it is rather expensive though.
It also has more connectors than the Aopen.
That is a good thing because I have run out of connectors.

I also have the Antec true power 430W psu. The volts are stable and the psu is quiet.

A third for that one :)

Spending the extra dough on a power supply is definitely worth it.

What? Whos this GeneralKeebler character? Since when do you post here? Oh, this is your forum, i see.

I would say the 380w Antec TruePower should be suitable for your needs. With a better quality ps, it seems a lower wattage will suffice.

I personally am running a 330w Antec TruePower.
