View Full Version : Sports specific Sub-Forum
Time to cast your votes peeps :)
A few people have been asking for a sports subforum for the pub, so let's put it the vote. The poll will be open for till Monday night and then it'l be created if it is voted accordingly ;)
We don't want loads of sub-forums but there seems to be huge volume of sports fans (from all arenas of sport) :)

I know what I mean. Why is American football called football because you hardly use your feet

NS,
I dont think its drifting anywhere. Its just going to be somewhere where members can talk about sport.
I thought this was a tech forum... *goes off to check front page of site*

I voted yay for a Sports Sub-forum. :thumbup
If it goes ahead, perhaps there needs to be some sort of differentiation between the major American/Canadian sports and the major British sports.
Example:
1) Americans & Brits confusing Soccer & Football (no US guys, we will not be forced to refer to football as soccer!).
2) Confusion between Canadians and Brits with, say, hockey (it's a field sport in Britain).

It still is a tech forum. This sub forum is just a place when us people who like sports will have somewhere to chat with people we know.
The debate forum was turned down (The decisions supported by many members) under the reasoning that "This is a tech site, and wasn't tech related."
There are far fewer members supporting this initiative than the debate forum, and doesn't relate in the slightest to technology, yet it's up for voting? Curious. Perhaps such a statement was nothing but an unarguable ruse designed to shroud an ulterior motive, in which case, there is explaining to be done. Despite that digression...
Because of the above fact, I vote nay. I would urge the administration to be fair and consistent with its decisions in the future, and would like to remind the users that "This is a tech site," and the appearance of a sports forum can not be defended with "Well it'd still be a tech site," because the administration has shown in the past that it's not a viable excuse for the users they represent (But ok for the admins themselves? :skeptic: )
Good day. :)

Roll your eyes all you like. I present an interesting paradox that needs questioning.
Debate forum? Not tech related, declined without vote.
Sports forum? Not tech related, opened to vote.
wtf?
"Iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii'm saaaaaaaaaaaaailing awaaaaaaaay."

You and everyone else knows why debate forum was declined. Even if it starts fine, at some point there's gonna be a flame war. What are you gonna flame about sports? I also voted no but not because I didn't want it but because it would probably be empty.
It's not about the debate forum. I have mine at keyboardjockey.com. I like it there. :D
I do know the real reason. I also know the reason publicly given was an utter ruse to make the rest of us go away. However now that the decision about that forum has been irreversibly made (Which is quite alright  ), the same rules should apply to the Sports Forum as well...And I'm curious as to why they do not.
Again, I will reiterate firmly WHY I am progressing down this path:
-Inconsistency
-Hypocrisy
Rules set for one, should apply to the next, and the next, ad infinitum. If anyone would like to discuss my position, feel free to contact me on any of my listed instant messaging programs, or PM me. One person already has, and such discussions will not continue here.

Sports is something most people wont try and cut eachothers necks at. Debate forums always tend to turn into flame wars

Oh Thrax, don't get all deep on us..
Sports == Fun
Debate == Pissed off people
What's the big deal? Debate would take away from the tech nature of the site, because it MIGHT potentially alienate somebody who gets really pissed at something. Sports? The worst that's going to happen is a "my team vs. your team" which is (usually) a friendly banter. And if it ever turned not-friendly, of course our normal disciplinary policies would apply. This is not a black and white issue. Debate was never up for vote because the site's owners didn't want it. Sports IS up for vote because the site's owners don't have a problem with it.

I'm not wholeheartedly against or for it, but I have seen Sports discussions, just like those on politics or religion, turn into heated arguments. In the interest of keeping S-M's focus on tech, I voted Nay however.
The matter is closed and there won't be a sports forum.
If we do, we make a precedent. Use the pub for sports discussions.
'Hypocrisy' and 'double standards' aren't something the staff promote. After all, how dare we not want a forum that promotes aggression and seperates members of our community. Suppose that's the same for all non-tech potential forums?
Remind us not to suggest another forum in the future.

Would of been nice for an official 2003/04 NHL thread to exist there but now you guys will all be subjected to it in o-t, t-minus 32 days. :)

A Debate forum would clearly have led to flame wars, childishness etc. Thats is why it was declined. A Sports would not necessarily have led to led to that.
I agree this is a tech site.
Moreover it is a democratic tech site, and we voted not to have a Sport Forum. So we will not have a Sport Forum. The people have spoken, and everyone's happy :)

I invite all you sports fans to talk sports on addaboy if you want. If you brits want a dedicated Football forum, i'll be happy to create one for you. Right now I have college football and NFL forums, let me know if you're interested.
Just a reminder, a sub forum would also allow those people that didn't want be bothered by sports stuff in the Pub area. Second, I was planning to post a sports based thread but decided that it was too much trouble, if there had been a sports forum.... who knows. I tried to vote but the vote was already closed and it isn't Monday night yet... oh well. I can deal with the owners and staffs prerogative.
