Hi

Like others I have picked up the Smit.fraud trojan.

I have followed the instructions posted by Buckeye Sam on previous posts.

In summary, I have run adware and spybot and quarantined 77 hisk risk files on adware.

My hijack log looks like this

I am trying to delete the R1 files as outlined in Sams post and the quicknavigate R list but every time I redo a scan they are still there.

I have turned off system restore and cleared all the files mentioned in step 5 of Sam post.

I have also downloaded the smitfraud file from Bleeping computer.

A friend saysythe only way to get around it is to use reload the XP which I am obviuosly loathe to do.

Everything except my hotmail account which I cannot access appears to be working but I cannot change the dafualt web browser from quicknavigate.com and it teels me I have a stealth virus and to purchase software (not done!)

Can you help ? Is the PC ok to use for banking / purchase of goods etc ?

Thanks

Matt

Following on from my previous post, I have noticed that the Hijack this programme is creating back ups presumably of the files that I am trying to remove. Would this be the reason why they are not deleting.

If you have not done so please make sure you can view all files.
Open my computer>click tools>folder options>view>check show hidden files and untick hide extensions> click apply>ok

Post a new log. If you have done this step previously ignore this and move on to the online scans listed below.

Run these online scans:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm

Your system looks to be free of the smitfraud trojan.

You may try running Hijack this while in safe mode to get rid of the R1 entries.

Thanks.

The Housecall doesnt load (gets to the page where you are supposed to click on the C drive but nothing showing in that box.

On the Panda, I am always re directed to Quicknavigate.com (which is the virus default home page)

The R1's are removed in Safe mode but return in normal mode. They delete from the log but then when run again they re-appear and the problem is still there.

it appears that any Microsoft site is blocked. I cannot acces hotmail or my Outlook account.

Make sure that you can VIEW ALL HIDDEN FILES. (http://www.short-media.com/forum/showpost.php?p=172588&postcount=3)

Place a checkmark next to these entries, close all browsers and windows, and have HijackThis fix them by clicking Fix Checked:

Download rkfiles.zip
http://skads.org/special/rkfiles.zip
Unzip the contents to a permanent folder.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial61.html)

Doubleclick rkfiles.bat
It will scan for a while, so please be patient.
Wait till the DOS window closes and reboot back to normal mode.

Post the contents of C:\log.txt in your next reply.

Good! Nothing hidden, just the BHO file.

Reboot your computer into SAFE MODE (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial61.html)

Place a checkmark next to these entries, close all browsers and windows, and have HijackThis fix them by clicking Fix Checked:

Just an update on my previous post.

Homepage is now back to normal and PC seem to be functioning fine.

Only problem now is still cannot access any Microsoft sites ie hotmail, Outlook web basd e mail or install any XP updates. I am worried that may have deleted a file or similar in previous attempts to clear the Smitfraud.

Download Hoster.

http://www.funkytoad.com/download/hoster.zip

This will restore your original Host files.
Run the program and press Restore Original Hosts and press OK.

Let me know if that makes a difference.

Tried that but no change I am afraid.

Ok, next step. Download and install Firefox.

http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

Can you get to those sites with Firefox?

mattspurs
21 May 2005, 6:21pm
Yes I can get nearly all of them.

With Firefox as my default internet browser I can access my web basd Outlook account and my hotmail account. Thanks.

Still cant retrieve the auto updates from Microsoft though from the desktop.

I think i deleted a file I should not have in our early Smit.fiaud removal process.

Anyway, can you confirm that I am clean and if possible how the small remaining problem could be fixed.

Thank you very much for your help.

Your log is clean. Now to fix your other problem, try to repair IE.
