You got to be kidding me dude? And I thoiught the $300 bucks I was quoted today was nasty.
Ok we all have got to get on the discount airfare sites and find cheap tickets for shorty.
I propose we start a collection to get shortys skinny little butt here for the
S-M LAN 2005. I bet his sweetie can pack his skinny butt in a small enough box we can just overnight fed-Ex his butt here for way less if we send him some sandwichs to eat on the way. I mean come on now. We send beer and snacks and they punch some air holes in a big box?? Oh sure its sorta cramped but... I mean he is a computer geek? How big can he be anyway?
Overnight envelope to the UK is only like $30?
Has anyone seen how big Shorty really is anyway? I mean in person ? I ahve seen pics but he may look bigger in the pics than real life? (grin)
Can he fit in a USPS overnight envelope?
I think we need measurements and weight anyway to proceed....

Do I even have to PM you to tell you I'll be there?
I mean, even if I didn't have the time already, I'd make it work somehow.
EDIT: Out of curiosity, do you plan for us to leave our computers outdoors (under a pavillion tent)? It's not the security that worries me, but the weather...
And of course I'll take care of lodging myself. Either I'll sleep in my car, home, or pass out on the floor (and many of you know I'm not too picky about my sleeping location).

.
Who would be there to pick me up from the airport? :D If this was a poker game, I'm all in
I will have to go to Mustang Week next year :p
Also I need to know which airport to fly into. I'm gonna look at ticket prices when I get back from town in a bit.

primesuspect

Detroit's got two.. Three if you count Bishop which is only about 60-80 miles away. DTW is definitely the airport you want to fly into. Of course I will pick you up. I provided taxi service for mondi and blackhawk last year.
I can recommend coming in a day earlier and leaving a day later so you have some chill time. Plus, I think flights originating on thursdays are cheaper. You definitely want to get here before the lan, not the day of. Setup time and all that.
If I can't, TheSMJ lives close to metro airport as do mcbain and pseudonym. SOMEBODY will be able to pick you up and take you back :)

My neighbors are actually cool in the new neighborhood. They joined us for the 4th of July party last year MR I DIDN'T MAKE IT TO THE FOURTH OF JULY BASH :p
Does it have a floor, or will we be right in the grass with our tables and chairs? Is the power coming from your house? Are you going to choose the A/C option?
Sorry for all the questions, but if my computer and I are going to spend a night or two outside in a tent, I feel better knowing what to expect...
Grass floor, no doubt. It's done for weddings all the time... may make Primes lawn a bit worse for wear... he'll need to mow it before the tent goes up though. Like a nice putting green....

I'm looking into flooring. They offer it, I don't know what it costs yet. AC is expensive. It would QUADRUPLE the cost of the tent. I could say to everybody "if everybody wants AC, we're going to quadruple the reg fee" and hey, if everyone's willing to pay it, we'll get it. I'm not sure yet - i haven't gotten a firm quote.
I'll chip in.... say an extra $20 or $30 for AC.... Not that I'm mr. money bags (hardly) but AC would be nice.... oh, and little umbrellas for my drinks.... that would really rock. :D

[V][AGIC']i might be able to round up one or two of those ac units you stick out your window, we could rig um up
If you could that'd be great. It's all we'd need even if the weather did get that bad. We'd just stick the backs out a door we're not using, and wrap the door flap around them.
EDIT: There'll be a grill... but I have no problem burning down Brian's garage in the name of smores.
You're all forgetting that we can roll the sides of the tents up.. Probably get a nice breeze goin' through the LAN.

if its really hot (85-90+) we could round up window type AC units and stack em in the shape of a wall, or place them around the perimeter. i got a nice one in my room i could bring along. 5 or 6 would probably be enough for the tent.
TheSmJ
27 May 2005, 10:24am

GHoosdum
27 May 2005, 6:03pm
You're not allowed to have anything on your lap during takeoff and landing - all items carried on the plane must be stowed under the seat in front of you or above your head in the overhead bins. Most airlines are pretty strict about that rule.
test_tube_tony
27 May 2005, 6:13pm
well, they let you bring a laptop on a plane, so i dont know why they wouldnt do the same with a lcd monitor in a cary on bag
GHoosdum
27 May 2005, 6:52pm
You could carry it on, as long as you stash it under the seat or in the overhead bin during takeoff and landing. I've never been on a plane where the flight crew allowed me to keep my notebook out during those times.
Was wanting to come to this one but unfortunately am playing at a festival July 30th. :(

Eh. I'd like to come (and I think Mc.Dubs would if I did... he's not around here much, but a big LAN isn't something we get around this area very often), but I don't know.
It's a long drive. I'm pretty sure my parents said we could drive out there by ourselves, but oh well. My parents would just make a weekend of it somewheres out there they said.
I have no money. I could pull some out of savings, but damn I don't want to. I'll hopefully have a job sometime soon, but I don't know. I need a new keyboard, and some acceptable (not great, but decent) heaphones if I go, too.
I don't know how many of my games will actually work, being that I've got only one or so (probably two or three between us, but still) that's legal. :(
This last one is just me being a whiny bitch and I know it. I'm personally not too keen on taking and keeping my computer outside. It's not theft I'm worried about. It's weather. I live in Wisconsin, which is the same-ish area, so I know what's up. The weather can change so unbelievably fast. If we end up getting a wicked storm, there's no hiding :-/. And whether or not the tent is weather proof isn't going to help much. If it rains, even at all, the ground will be wet. What about fog, too? It's a low chance, but it could happen. Fog so bad you can't see the car ahead of you can't be too good for computers.
Also, crap crawls around on the ground. It's unlikely, but I don't want a beetle or whatever frying something. ;D
I'll think about it. 80% chance I won't be there, as much as I'd like to :(
We Nexlians are still undecided. We don't make decisions very quickly.

31 May 2005, 2:43am

I'll even let Snuffie hump my leg again, if that will change some minds.
Just think of how much fun you'll have for the next year having been a part of all the events we'll be talking about for months and months to come. :D

I'm trying to convince Park to tag along with me for the 12 hour road trip. So if he's in.. we might be there.
I've seen these "structures" and I can vouch for them. I've been in one during a downpour and wind storm in the middle of a field. Yeah, it was scary... Yeah, I thought the thing would collapse, but it didn't. These things are made to last and people don't want to spend money on these things to have them collapse during weddings or church gatherings. We're not in an open field and the weather in Detroit is different than mid Mich. and Wisconsin. They are more like Ohio really....
The tent is designed to hold **** like bands and weddings.. Even in inclement weather.

All the talk about this years Lan is really making me jealous & wanting to be there. The price of filghts has come down a bit to £616 return but it's still way too expensive for me.
So can I suggest that if it happens next year you don't hold it in the months of July & August, if at all possible, cos the cost of flights literally doubles during these months. Before or after July/Aug you can get a flight for £350 return which is much more reasonable.

Brian - I'm wondering what the power accomodations will be? I'm pretty certain that the standard 100A service line to a home won't be able to support 40 PCs all running concurrently, if the house itself is using any power.
I used an estimate of 175W of power consumption for a PC with monitor. If I'm way off base here, somebody tell me.
OK, now, there will be about 40 PCs there. 40 PCs * 175W = 7000W
And if we remember from our schooling, W = V * A and in the US, we use 110V systems, so 7000W/110V = 63A
Assuming your house has the fairly standard 100A service, 63% of it will be used by the 40 PCs running in the back yard. Are you planning on hooking up a temporary upgrade with the electric company?
Just checking!
//edit: Also, how is all this power getting out into the yard? Even if the house has enough service to support 40 PCs on top of the appliances already in it, we can't just jack off of a single extension cord, or it would blow the circuit. Electricians usually wire circuits to 80% capacity, that is, 8 outlets assuming 100W average usage per outlet. That means a single circuit can probably sustain 1000W without blowing the breaker, or 1/7 of my conservative estimate on the power used by our PCs.
My main reason for coming is definitely to hang out with everyone. But if the PCs can run that would be good too. ;)
Not as important as power but.....
WHO'S MAKING THE BADGES???
Well, so far I can assure you that we will be playing:
UT2K4
Half Life 2 MP
Some flavor of BF - if BF2 is out by then, maybe that - but if not, most definitely desert combat.
If you come up with a definite list let me know, being as horrible as I am at actually playing games, I'll volunteer to keep the servers in order again, the more I can set up in advance, the more fun can be had.
plus I'll need to fix it so that team pink wins this time.
m
I think GH's power estimate might be a bit low. Here's what I see as the range of power consumption that we should anticipate:
Tower PS:
low: 300w high: 440w (lower while running if folding is disabled)
Monitor:
low (LCD): 25-30w high(CRT):100-150w
Extras:
low(none):0w high(UPS + some powered perifs.):50w? (I'm not sure on this one)
This gives a consumption range of 275-750. That makes the mean consumption around 500w per person.
This might be a high estimate (more than half of us might have LCD monitors, or we might turn off folding for the weekend... although, if I remember DeeBee's correctly, almost everyone had a CRT, and about half of us had UPSs), but we should be prepared for the high estimate.
With the full compliment of 40, that would be 20,000w or nearly 185a on a 110v system.

Truefully that is my only concern to keep me from coming.
It sounds like it will be a blast up there, but if there is not enough power to run the computers then it is just a camping trip with a lot of weenies and I don't want my buns infiltrated :p
So, what is the word on the power issue?
primesuspect
2 Jun 2005, 8:58pm
I'm going to have an electrician look at it. I had already discussed bringing mains power from my breaker right out to the tent with a couple of dedicated 30amp circuits. I already have a dedicated 20 amp circuit in the yard.
I also have discussed with my neighbor tapping into his power. One of my neighbors said "no problem" and i have yet to broach the subject with the other yet. That gives us another 20-60 amps right off the bat.
Extension cords for power will be 30amp commercial grade cords for the main power feeds.
I'll let you know as I have updates.

Update on power issue:
Tonight microman brought over an inline multimeter. We hooked it up to my computer, my lcd monitor, and kyle's CRT monitor.
My computer is a 2600+, 500w psu, three HDs, a 9800 pro, 4 case fans. It would be safe to assume that this probably represents the "average" lan computer.
Computer (while folding and playing UT2k4 at full bore) - 2 amps
LCD: .5 amps
CRT: .75 amps
So with these numbers, we calculated it all out and if we estimate pessimistically, we will need around 185 amps for this adventure. I have 100 amps currently, with another 20 from a neighbor.
I put in a request from the local power company to upgrade to 200amp service which, combined with my neighbor's 20amps, will provide us with 220 amps total, more than enough to run my household and 40 computers.
I am willing to invest in the power infrastructure, especially since if this event works out, I will probably hold it here annually.
The tent will be literally 5 feet from my garage. We will be installing a 100 amp subpanel in my garage and pulling 4 more feeds using commercial (20amp) extension cables to the tent - 3 from my basement, directly at the breaker panel, and another from my neighbor's dedicated 20 amp outdoor circuit.
Is this satisfactory to team nexlia? ;)

Like I said, I'm going primarily for the social aspect of things, but it's nice to power the PCs as well - based on what you've said, Brian, it looks like our power situation will be a LOT more secure than it was at Deebe's! Consider me attending.
If I can make it to the S-M LAN it's strictly a social affair. I don't game and see no need to drag a puter along on an airplane. In my past this has proven to be a risky proposition even with the best professional shipping crates.

How unfortunate... I was so looking forward to having my revenge!
So QCH is bugging me like a little brother about the SM LAN so I figured I'd better respond. ;D
I would like to make the event; however, I have a single concern - effective cooling for the tent. Even if we put just 20 computers in the tent, without an effective cooling solution, it's going to get pretty miserable.
Sure we can roll up the sides but then your letting in quite a bit of extra sunlight, which as we all know makes it very difficult to see both CRTs and LCDs.
In my opinion this structure needs to be primarily closed off during the day and with an average daytime temp of 80+ degrees, we'll have the makings for a nice indian sweat lodge unless we can find a decent cooling solution.
A/C would be the best and I would be happy to pay the $60 dollars to do this right and not have to worry about heatstroke or my system melting down.
I'm curious as to what others might feel about this as well. The subject was touched on briefly here but I feel it's right up there with "power" in regards of importance.

well, i just can't visualize that, but if you think it's worth a shot, bring some window units.
I'm not sure having several window A/C units will do a lot of good for the power situation. I mean, even window air conditioners draw HUGE amounts of power, we have a seperate breaker that goes just to the plug our A/C is on, it's really going to sap the power you were concerned about for all the PCs.

I'm almost 50 now. When I was a kid we were working on a software dev. project almost around the clock trying to finish .... The stupid thermostat for the office was programmed to go off at 8:00 at night and come on early in the morning. So it was cold as hellll about 4:00 AM.
We used to sleep by the exhaust port of the hard drives in the computer room to keep warm.
5mb fixed and 5mb removable drives! The thing was half the size of a washing machine. The 5mb removable looked like 10 old record albums stacked an inch apart in a clear dome thing.

I think I'm the only one that shipped their pc parts. I just put them in a box, went to the UPS store and had them ship it. They suck! Pack the thing yourself with as much packaging material can fit. Then ship it via FedEx or UPS a day before leaving, use 2 or 3 day air and book your flight so you arrive 2-3 days earlier. Can't remember how much it weighed but it cost like $95 I think.

Hope you guys have a good time and post some pics when it's done. Would love to see how much fun it was and maybe I will be able to make it next year.

Let me get this right, we're gonna be setup in Prime's backyard under a huge white tent (At the height of summer) with no air conditioning?!?
SOUNDS LIKE FUN!!!
Here's a prediction, very little gaming will get done in the daytime, but come sundown.. everyone will be yelling and screaming. And there might even be some playing computer games.

Anybody who doesn't have UT2K4 can buy it today and tomorrow at gogamer.com for $9.90 + $1.99 shipping. This is the DVD version. Crazy price!

Aaaqrgh! I just bought it at Amazon.com a few hours ago. Oh well, Amazon's prices aren't too bad either.
I also ordered Half-Life 2 and Pacific Fighters. I'll pick-up Battlefield 2 before the LAN since it has a lot of buzz.
I'm not sure how much FPS I'll be able to do before the LAN. I'm still addicted to Rome Total War. So many games, so little time....

One week left to register! :( I'm actually quite surprised at the low turnout. Everyone gets so hyped up about the event and then when we actually nail everything down, not that many people sign up!
What happened to the Missouri crew? Leishi? Anybody else from the east coast? Come on people! This only happens once a year!

Most of the Missouri crew is 17. I've tried and tried but the parents keep giving me a big no. I think most of the guys were waiting on my parents to say ok so that they could tell theirs that I already got approved. It's sad, I know. :bawling:
The Missouri crew would be more than happy to hold a SM LAN in Missouri, it's a nice central location. We've already got a LANing group set up and numerous locations we can use. My parents would go for that one.
What's their main concern?

The 24+ hours that I'd have to drive round trip. What if I get hurt or something, I'd be so far away. What if the boogey man got me. They're real skeptical of the internet and are afraid that you guys aren't who you really say you are. They just kept naming off really stupid stuff.

They're real skeptical of the internet and are afraid that you guys aren't who you really say you are. They just kept naming off really stupid stuff. It's good to know some parents out there care very much about their children and love them completely. It's unfortunate that they don't understand the community of caring, supportive people here at Short-Media. Can't blame them. They don't have the time to visit the forums as much as you (or I) do.
I took a long road trip when I was 17. Parents went with me. ;D
With that said, I feel for you. Wish there was a way to impart to your parents about the responsible, organized hosts of the S-M LAN.
I really wish I could go, but I don't know what it will be like for me at that time. I have very little money with my parents gorging me becuase I was gorging them in Florida, and I am trying to move to Dallas to find a job there near my cousins. I swore I'd go to this one, but I just don't think I can. Even tried pretending it wasn't gonna happen despite the repeated sightings of S-M Lan 2005 thread(s). :bawling:
Authority, ask them what you would need to do to come to the LAN.

Yeah, I already talked to my parent about it, im good to go. I was waiting for the "ok" from you. Maybe things will shape up.... If the "boogey man" wants to try something, im sure that four 17 year olds could poke his **** in ;D
I understand the whole "what if the internet people arent who they say they are" but being around these forums gives you a real sense that everyone is who they are and you feel like you've personally known them for a while. We could switch drivers every once in a while, im a damn good driver, I just dont have a very good sense of direction.....at all. As long as someone is there to tell me where to go and what turn to make then we can get there safely. Keep pushing, ive gotta ask for those days off in advance.
sorry, i don't think i will be able to make it. my job scheduling is pretty much week to week so i don't really know in advance if i can take time off. makes plane tickets really expensive if you can't get them early. plus i just moved/drove to new york from chicago about a month ago, so i don't know if i can handle two major road trips in such a short time span.
i would like to attend and actually meet some of you guys, but wouldn't be able to let you know untill right before the LAN. might be able to do a random pop-in if i am not busy that week. but if we have to commit by a certain time i am afraid i won't be able to.

Enjoy it.. it's well worth going! :D

Ryko, there is a road trip contingent coming from NY. And by contingent, I mean Kwitko... A possible carpool?

I think Rob and I should fly to the UK and party with you and Nat instead.
Believe it or not.. it's not that much more expensive to see you guys in the UK versus stay in a tent in Detroit, if I can get cheap hotel rates.

They have Brian's number in their posession but I don't think they'll call. It's just a flat out no right now, no matter what I try. I'll make it there next year.. if it's the last thing I do.
Hurry guys... I can assure you, this LAN is something you don't want to miss!!!!

show them this (http://www.short-media.com/forum/showpost.php?p=137877&postcount=261)... There's not one face in that crowd that would hurt a fly... :)

How much room do you have? He was planning on taking a couple more people(including me).
I have a mini van... I could bring 3 others and still carry the PC stuff. I'm just out side of Chicago. If you can get to me, I can drive to Detroit. I WAS going to leave Wednesday night or Thursday morning so I can help setup... Let me know if this helps. I don't want to leave any later than 10:00 AM on Thursday. I have a tent you could borrow and you can camp out back Wednesday, if you like.

On a similar note.. I'm making those nifty laminated nametags that you'll be wearing and noone pays attention too. So please, if you came to the 2004 Lan and still have that nametag, bring it. For those of you who are first-timers, I need your Avatar and first name, you can pvt msg me that info. :mullet:

i too loved the name tag. mine spent some time hanging from the rear view mirror in my car, but the flashing of the sun off of it got to be too distracting, so i hung it from the shelf above my desk. i would love to have a 2005 name tag as well to hang next to it. PM me if thats ok.

Yea Shwaip, Nomad, profdlp, MiracleManS, Camman and Aranyic.. I got the info you sent.
Thanks guys.. Yesterday, I was having a discussion with my wife, I was griping about the amount of work involved in producing these things and mentioned that only the first-timers were getting tags.. she said it sounded stupid, "Why not make them for everybody?" I agreed.. So hey guys, don't tell anyone but I'll be making nametags for everyone, not just the n00bs. Once I'm done.. I'll parcel them up to Bruce about a week before the event.
