XP Desktop Icons Don't Stay!

I'm at my grandparents house, and my grandpa is having problems keeping his icons in the same place! Its totally stumped me, and I don't have any idea what could be causing this.

When you move an icon on the desktop to a different place, after restarting, it moves back!! All the lock icons, arrange icons, and lock to grid settings have been fooled with, but to no avail! Any ideas?

I know you tried this.
But try setting the combination of auto arrange and align to grid both to OFF.

The only time anything like that happens to me is when stupid auto arrange gets turned on and it forces you to stick to the grid.

yeah those are both off. those settings aren't changing which is really weird! No idea why it would be doing this.. :confused:

I've used it for years... After you align all your icons, you right click on "My Computer" and click "Save Desktop Icon Layout". If the icons get messed up... Right click on "My Computer" and click "Restore Desktop Icon Layout".
