digitally, that is. Mr. Bear finally visited long enough for me to get a few shots. He was interested in berries growing along the woodline.

We think he's probably two years old, maybe a little older. He's probably just been let go by his mother.

Phew! I'm glad it was with a camera.
Is that a black bear Leo? Arn't those the ones with a bad attitude? I'd be scared to death to ever leave the house.

Good pics Leo! That is the best part about not living in town. I sure miss my old home on the Kenai where I had several acres. There were Bears, Moose, Coyotes and assorted small critters passing through.
Good call on the age of the Bear.
In case anyone would like to know how to tell the size and age of a bear here goes. The ears remain about the same size from about the first year when the animal is still quite small and still with its mother. Then as the Bear grows the ears "appear to shrink" and grow farther apart as the Bear grows larger.

Awesome pics!

V8, I took the pictures from about 60 feet (20 meters) away. I was standing on our deck. I don't have a telephoto lens, so the bear was fairly small in the pictures. These I posted are enlarged.
Friendly? I doubt it. Never, ever assume that with a bear.
That settles it, I'm moving to Alaska!

That settles it, I'm moving to Alaska!Come on up. Fishing's good, skiing's good, and there is still land available on our mountain (but not much - most is Alaska state parkland).

Nice pics. Where I live, about ½ mile back in the woods we've seen a family of 4 moose, and a little further back is their nesting ground. There are also hundreds of deer back there and we've had all three (moose, deer, and bear) in our yard before. There have also been multiple bear sightings in the woods across the road.

It is truely tragic when a Moose falls from the nest.
*The person they land on never knows what hit 'em.*
You should see what a parking lot looks like after a herd of Moose flys over during migration. It's truely a nasty sight. ;D

Just don't let Mr. Bear get into your garbage, or you'll have a first-class nuisance on your hands.

Exactly. It would seem you've lived in bear country before. We store our garbage in the garage until pickup day, when we put it on the street as late as we can before the collection truck makes its run. New arrivals from the Lower 48 often don't know about this. The bears love garbage, get into it, and then have to be put down because they stake out homes and won't leave.

Where are you? Rural Oregon? Maine? Upper Peninsula, Michigan? Sounds like somewhere I'd like.

Yet again, great pics, Leo. It's great to hear you've already learned to "secure" your garbage. It took years for us to learn that up here in the Great White North of Maine. Our Sheltie, Winston (Churchill), and his Labrador partner in crime, Chevy, have permanently staked out our garbage.
We get Black Bears like that one up here in Maine along with numerous Moose, Turkey, Deer, and migrating Southerners. The Black Bears don't scare me, but I wouldn't get close to them. Do you see any Kodiaks in your area?
Leonardo
8 Aug 2005, 1:58am
No Kodiaks. Their habitat is exclusively Kodiak Island. There are grizzlies in the area, but I haven't seen one yet.

Grizzlies are cute and furry...like a real life Chewbacca. :p

Smart call Leo, no going Steve Irwin on us, and getting your arm chewed off please!!!!

Who was the supposed Grizzly expert that had lived and filmed close to them for years, yet just got killed? Reminds me of the shark expert who had his calf eaten off by a bull shark. He who underestimates an animal and overestimates himself is bound to lose something.

I've seen a bear once when i was visiting my aunt in Colorado. It was rumaging through her garbage. I've seen moose there too and they scared the living nasty stuff out of me, THEY'RE huge.

I know they don't make nests... it's just their sort of "home". There's holes where they've slept in and crap all over the place. I didn't know what else to call it. ;D
