Gas prices in my town have already went up .20 cents since the first of the week. I can now only imagine how much it will go up after seeing this news. Regular gas is at $2.37 a gallon, which I'm sure it is above that in some other areas of the country. But I wanted to link that for those who may have not seen it. I think I'm gonna buy me a good pair of walking shoes soon :mullet:

I hope the United States decides to do something about an impending oil crisis rather than watching the country slide in to paralysis as it did during the '70s.

Just bought gas this morning in New Iberia, LA for $2.33/gal(for regular).

I guess the rich, greedy oil compnies just keep getting richer off us working saps because I haven't really seen a whole bunch more bucks put back into exploration and production here in the Gulf Coast states. The drilling business is pretty good, but that could dry up at any time. I could go on about this topic, but the point of the thread is gas prices, not domestic drilling and production. ;)

It's been at $2.30ish here most of the summer. The lowest it got was around $2.15 for a week or so. Right now I heard someone say it's up to $2.66, I'll check on my way to work today. That's insane.

Last time I saw, prices were at a steady $0.55-56 and $0.59-62 a liter. Now that's not much of a problem here. The thinig is that a few weeks ago truckers (all of them and even if some did they couldn't cause of threats) went on strike and gas was rather scarce.

Now that everything's starting to get a bit normal, it seems some gas station owners are starting up rumors about a strike and everyone has to run to a gas station and fill up. Last time I was a gas station for 2hrs just to get $5 of gas.

I agree 100%. The scary part about it is this quote from the article.

Oil prices are 46 percent higher than a year ago, but they would need to surpass $90 a barrel to exceed the inflation-adjusted peak set in 1980.

Up North gas is about $1.15 cdn / litre which works out to $3.81 US / gallon. The price differential is due to tax. Its a 35 minute drive for me to work / school every morning, the mass transit project that's supposed to go from where I live to my school was supposed to be completed 5 years ago but they haven't started yet :/

Everything's one octane rating lower here in the mountains. I'm not sure why, though. Something to do with the lower air pressure?

You know, we have lots of oil up here in Alaska, but for some odd reason I don't think we use it. I think we just drill it and pump it just so we can put our ears and hands on the Pipeline and warm them up. You see we are technologically deprived up here and have no heaters.

Did anyone hear about the gas station in Texas that was selling gas for $0.263 a gallon? The owner of the gas station wasn't aware until later and people from 20 miles around were coming to the station for gas. The owner claims it was a computer error.

This is researchable on google. From a couple reports I saw, there is over 1 trillion barrels of oil in shale and tar sand deposits in Utah, Colorado and Wyoming. They say we have more recoverable oil in the US than the middle east does.

Canada has the same kind of oil deposits and had developed the technology to recover this oil, and there are less red tape in Canada than in the US to use this technology. In the US, anything less than $30 a barrel is economically unfeasable to use the same technology that Canada used to recover the oil out of these shale and tar sand deposits.

I also think that Bush isn't going to do anything about the oil prices because he is (partly) an oil baron.

The biggest reason why we don't use the oil deposits that we have is because of pressure from environmentalists.

Also, here in Wichita Falls, TX, gas went from $2.36 to $2.49 in one day for 87 octane.

Jumped to $2.69/Gal here in the Cincy yesterday. That was a 22-cent spike over the day before. It'll probably drop 10 cents today, settle in the $2.59 range, and then do the 20-cent hike, 10-cent drop thing again next week.

There was ONE station down the road that had it for $2.59. Being a lazy teenager, I still only put $10 of gas in. Then my stepdad went later that night and put an extra $40 in. Heh. Ahhhhh the joys of not spending your own money! I'm not always that lame, though, don't worry.

Although rest assured, it is no coincidence that cars driven after a teenager will almost certainly be on Empty. Nature's funny like that :D

Just filled up for $1.12CDN/litre. Unfortunatly, my civic requires >91 octane fuel, so it costs me around 12 cents more per litre than the posted price usually.

I believe that's about 4.25/gallon.

I'd really love to see more viable alternative fuel powered vehicles on the market. The hybrids are great, but I'd love to see something completely free from gasoline dependance, like hydrogen fuel cell technology, or flinstone cars, where I can just use my feet to propel the car forward.

As Bothered has said, just thank your lucky stars you're not living in the UK & paying the prices we have to pay.

*edit* and for those of you Honda Civic drivers be also thankful that you don't drive mine. When I put my foot down it'll regularly only return 14 miles/gallon, that's the price you pay for 300bhp from a 2lt engine. :bawling:

Remember what I drive? That's right, a big ol' Chevy Van. That sucker gets no more than probably 15 miles to the gallon, on a good day. We won't even talk about the bad days.

Another month or two of works and I should be able to buy a decent used car. Hopefully.

Whiners. I see this as nothing but good news. Right now its a little bit of a pain financially, but truthfully, its not terrible. The only thing this will do is help create more of an effort to alternative fuels anyway..which is the long-term solution...gotta think long-term, esp. in this business anyway....as a civilization we've been dependant on fossil fuels in one way or another for hundreds of years...if we can wean that depancy....its nothing but good...(the irony is that to create the new fuels, most of these methods still require the use of fossil fuels at the earliest stage....I digress). Besides...simple solution to rising gas costs....invest in oil!...make your money back that way....

GHoosdum

We're running out of time for alternative energy sources... (http://today.reuters.com/news/NewsArticle.aspx?type=scienceNews&storyID=2005-08-18T135352Z_01_SCH850008_RTRIDST_0_SCIENCE-ENERGY-DUTCH-ECN-DC.XML) apparently.

Gargoyle
18 Aug 2005, 5:44pm
I agree with McBain. This will only serve to increase the public demand for alternative energy sources for cars, and technology advances a lot faster when it's marketable.

Once those alternatives are in place, gasoline demand will decrease, so prices will, too. Maybe in a decade or two, I'll be able to fill up my 67 Volvo for cheaper than my new hydrogen-alfalfa-sunshine-powerered futurecar. :D

GHoosdum

I don't think the fact that he's Dutch makes his point any less valid... economies are giving ground in other places because they're bending under the strain of the modest energy price increases we've already seen. If we continue at this pace, gas will be $4 per gallon in the US by the end of 2006, and we don't have the kind of mass transit structure in place that Europe does. Americans won't drive their cars any less, they'll simply cut the fat away in other parts of their budget... which means that the economic growth the country is currently experiencing will end. Which means that it will be too late for alternative energy sources to prevent the problems that are caused by the rising price of fossil fuels.

If anything, the point is even more valid coming from a European, since they are years ahead of the US in alternative energy sources development.
