View Full Version : Snowmass Conference - PICS (DIALUP WARNING)
I haven't been around in the last week due to me getting ready for this business trip to Snowmass, Colorado (WEBSITE (http://alcpg2005.colorado.edu/)). I have never been sent anywhere by Fermilab, so this is new to me. Not only my first business trip but also the first time I've been away from my family for more than 4 days, and the first time to the high altitude (about 9,000 feet right now).
I'll be here until Sunday, August 28. Long time away but this place is BEAUTIFUL... Looks a lot like Leo's pictures of Alaska.

These two are my favorite ones... one trying to be fancy and the other just for the color and view...

Beautiful pics, Q. :)
Man, I love mountains. My only gripe about my current location is that it's so flat here on the coast of Lake Erie.

That brings back memories. I used to ski at Snowmass and Aspen all the time.
Enjoy the views, it's like no other place in the world.

First business trip, and to such a lovely area? I'm happy for you. Take every moment you've got to enjoy the area. Great!
Thanks for the pictures. That's my kind of country.
Somehow, I work 4 days in a row then every other day for week and a half. I'll have more time to sit and do whatever in years.... Tons of pictures and tons of reading.... I'm ready, I can handle it. :D

That looks like some beautiful country, Q. Enjoy your business trip to the max.
I lived in the valley between Aspen and Glenwood for about 5 years. Up the frying pan river outside basalt. Outside carbondale. And I had 40 acres with the last house before Ski Sunlight outside Glenwood.
My wife is third generation from that Valley. Thats where she went to high school etc..
We will probably be over there this weekend to visit her folks and go party in Aspen actually.
I live just outside CO. Springs and work in Denver now.

!!! MORE NEW PICTURES !!!
Maroon Bells and Crater Lake...
Maroon Bells = 9500 feet
1.8 mile hike to...
Crater Lake = 11000 feet
By far the most beautiful place that I have EVER seen. If there is a more splended place on earth...

Jet lake. Lost lake. Taylor reservoir and the gunnison river. Trapper lake above meeker. Everywhere in the climbtops.
Remember Rob's family is three generations from that valley. Her dad has hunted, trapped and fished that area for 50 years.

Sheesh. You were wondering how you'd fill the idle hours - looks like you worked it out. Beautiful shots. :)
Got more coming too... not as awesome but still amazing.
Last set of pictures... Over 200 pictures!!!
Many of them are just miscellaneous pictures of Snowmass Village and the areas around it. A bit more of Aspen, including a trip up Aspen Mountain. A few pictures a golden Eagle that is unable to fly and it being cared for by a wildlife refuge. Next, Pictures of humming birds... yes I've seen hummingbirds before, but not 6 inches away and three different types at once. I even got "buzzed" by one of them. Some pictures of red rock mountains and Mt. Sopris. A VERY dirty rental car (which was forced to take MANY off road trails... heeeeee). Then some pictures of a Real ghost town. A town that started in the 1880's and was almost dead by 1895. A quick picture of my bent platinum ring.... which I have no idea how it happened.
The last 100 are of the town of Marble, an old Marble cutting factory, and the back, back, back, trails that go to a living ghost town call Crystal City. I know, "It cannot be a ghost town if people still live there..." Well, the town stopped being a town then a few families came back to live during the summer months while being surrounded by old buildings. Anyway, the final pictures are of some REALLY hairy <strike>roads, no trails, </strike> no paths up to Sheep Mountain and Lead King Basin.
The last few pictures are from the Marble mine. This mine is the SOLE source of all the marble for all the US Monuments. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is cracked and needs to be fixed and the big piece of marble on the flatbed is waiting federal permission to be moved. The final picture is the piece of marble that I lugged down from the mine, then out 1/4 to the car.... heavy but beautiful. That's it....
From here, I head back to the boring flatlands of Illinois.... Take care and I hope you enjoyed the pictures.

More great pics, QCH....Weirdly enough, I think my favorites are of the hummingbirds. I've always loved those little hyperactive denizens of the sky.

Looks like it's the hummingbirds in a landslide. I liked the other ones a lot, too. :)
