My grandma is getting a computer so she can e-mail people and harass her family. Broadband is still relatively expensive where she is, and all she really needs is a 56k connection. Basically - what are your suggestions for a modem and Dial Up ISP

CompuServe worked great for my parents. It's slow, but a lot faster than most dialup connections (at least in our area).
I think Earthlink is good also, but I dont know.

AT&T WorldNet is a good choice, as is Earthlink.

See if you can find a cheap ISP in her area. Sometimes, broadband companies will have 384K (I know Charter does) connections. They may run some specials on it.
And there's always NetZero.

seeing as how I live in the same area, pretty much the only broadband choice comes from verizon. And it sucks. The naked DSL price isn't reasonable, especially if all she's going to do is e-mail.

well my SBC DSL price is $14.95/month, the same as most dialup companies. I get 1250kbps down, 330kbps up.

$20 for the first 3 months, $30 after that for crappy verizon dsl.
I don't remember if it's a big deal or not anymore, but should I look for a hardware modem, rather than a winmodem? She'll be running only xp anyways.

If she needs a 56k modem something by usr/3com is always the best :).

Consider that even though she says she may be only using it for e-mail, she may get nosy about the WWW one day...

not before she dies.
